Subject: Ronin's Orkz P&M Blog
|
 |
Mekboy Hammerin' Somethin'
|
Hey guys,
This will be my first P&M blog, in order to hopefully motivate me into finishing my orks that are still unpainted. My Orks are currently my first and only army for 40k, and seeing as 6th ed. just hit us, I figured its time to finish what I still have, before I even contemplate getting a second army. Probably have close to about 2000 points worth of Orks, and I still need to finish;
20 Ork Shootas Mob - Complete!
x9 Killa Kans - 3 Complete
x2 Deff Dreads - 1 Complete
x2 Big Meks with KFF - 1 Complete!
x3-6 Warbikers
Most of what I already have are a mixture of Blood Axes and Goffs, but with the ones I have left remaining, I am attempting a mixture of Bad Moonz and Evil Sunz, since their colour scheme has started to grow on me. Atm, I am just trying to finish my third, and (for now) last shoota boy mob, and starting today, I have about four boyz left to finish painting.
Forgive the images. Im not much of a photographer, and the only camera I got is the one on my smartphone, but I hope it will be enough to show you what I can do, and provide enough detail so as I can receive feedback. Anyways, after about 4 hours (while simultaneously watching Game of Thrones ), I got about as far as doing the basecoat, and adding the washes.
If I have time tomorrow, I'll try to get them finished up, if not next week. In any case, I also got another photo of what my boyz look like once the paintjob (barring the bases) are finished. Here is a big shoota boy, a nob and shoota boy, with a couple of the unfinished orks left.
Here's a close-up;
And here's one with the flash on, dunno if that makes the Orks look better or not, but the red certainly makes them look more pink.
Anyways, thats all for today, and please, any feedback or critique would go a long way to helping me improve my painting
Cheers.

Whelp, today I managed to finish off the last four Orks that I posted in my first post. Once again, sorry for the quality of the photography.
And for a couple of closeups;

All that's left now is to complete the base for the whole 20-strong mob. Though I dont think Ill have the time to do that until after Wednesday this coming week so probably wont be posting anything for a while, unfortunately.

Seems not many people are interested on commenting, but that's cool, cause today I finished painting the bases of the 20-strong shoota mob.
Excuse the mess that is my painting station
It's been through a lot... but Im proud of the work Ive done so far. Next it's onto painting the first of my two KFF Big Meks.
As always, a comment would be welcome

Can't beat a messy paint station; you should see mine
They're looking orksome (see what I did there ) and the contrast between the greens and red really pulls the model together.
For me, I'd try and get the holes in the barrels of the shootas bigger to really finish'em off...but thas just me.
Keep it up mate

Thanks for the kind words, mate. I'd use a bigger drill if I could for the shootas, but I dont own one so I use what I can.
Anyways, just wanted to post a WiP update of my Big Mek with KFF
As you can see, I only had time today to block in all the base colours for the Big Mek. Washes, highlights and so on will come later (maybe tomorrow).

Another WiP update for my Big Mek (whom doesnt have a name yet).
Added some washes to the Big Mek, and drybrushed all the metal areas before re-applying another layer of washes.
Also re-layered some Kommando Khaki + Skull White over his apron/satchel to ensure a nice even coating. Will attempt to finish it off tomorrow, which includes the skin, the red, teeth and any flame motifs I can fit in.
Also took a (admittedly, not very good) picture of my AOBR Warboss, whom I call Grimsnik. Originally when I first got into 40k, I was mostly interested in Goffs and Blood Axes, hence the black and white checkerboard, and camouflage. This is the level of painting I hope I can achieve with my Big Mek currently, however this Warboss was painted nearly 2 years ago, and I havent been painting much since. Partly why I started this blog was to help get me motivated to paint again.
Comments are welcome

Hey guys, just wanted to post a final update on my Big Mek, as he's finally complete!
As you can see, the base rim is still drying in this photo, but for the most part he's complete now
His skin is really pasty and pale (for an Ork) because I figured that he'd be indoors tinkering a lot, and not getting enough photosynthesis happening, or something.
That and I wanted the skin to help separate him out from all the other boys (as if the KFF didnt do that already, lol).
As always, comments are welcome.

Dude, I really like your paintjobs. Nice and colorful, yet not overdone....good work!
I especially like the camo pants on the boss (they're looking good and I had to smile at the thought that he wears them despite the obvious fact that they won't hide him or help him blend into the surroundings.... lol)
Also, the pale skin on the mek looks great!
Subbed and waiting for updates!

Really like the flames on the shoulders of the Orks as they give the models some contrasting colour which can sometimes be a problem getting in an Ork army, well done!

Thanks, glad you like it. My recipe for greenskin has differed over the years Ive been painting them, though I've started to settle on the ones I did for the Evil Sunz. The recipes (in GW's old paint range, apologies, havent tried out the new range yet);
Ork Warboss - This is actually GW's 'regular' recipe for painting ork skin that you usually see them use.
Black Undercoat
Orkhide Shade
Knarloc Green, making sure to leave the Orkhide show in the recesses of the musculature
Goblin Green, once again making sure the Knarloc Green underneath is shown in the recesses.
Goblin Green + Bleached Bone 1:1 highlights
Bleached Bone hightlights for extremities.
Optional: A final Thraka Green wash to blend it all (which is something I've taken to doing)
Evil Sunz - My newest recipe, and one Ill be sticking with from now on for my Orks
White Undercoat (though Black is fine too, just need more coats of the next step)
Gretchin Green basecoat
Devlan Mud wash, lay it on thick and heavy!
Gretchin Green + Golden Yellow, 1:1 mix, making sure to leave the Devlan Mud in the recesses of the musculature
Gretchin Green + Golden Yellow + Rotting Flesh, 1:1:2 mix, for highlights
Thraka Green wash, to blend it all together again.
In the example of my Big Mek, I just added greater and greater amounts of Rotting Flesh to the Gretchin Green + Golden Yellow mix, until I was using pure Rotting Flesh for highlights.
Hope that helps

Hope it doesnt count as thread necromancy if I'm updating my own blog...
Anyways, its been a while since my last update, but I haven't been slacking off
For lo and behold, I have completed my first Deff Dread and a squad of 3 Killa Kans with Rokkit launchas.
For this group, I've tried some new things, such as Citadel's new Lamentor's Yellow glaze, which really saturated my yellows. Also tried weathering for the first time, so any comments on how they look would be appreciated.

Sorry for the poor quality of the photos still, I've still only got my smartphone to take pictures with, but I tried taking shots of it against a white background to see if it helps. I'm not sure but I think it made the red on my dreads a little too pink.
Once again, comments welcome, particularly on my attempt at weathering.

I like the weathering and the running pose of the last kan, good work!
But I think there is too much red in some places.... I'd try to pick out some small details with a metal color.....

Thanks for that, MrMerlin
I do think you're right, looking back on it. Although the pics Ive posted up dont show the sides and back of the Kans and Dreads, where there is more varied colour painted. But its something I'll definitely keep in mind for my next 6 kans + dread
Anyways, just wanted to post a small update of some objective markers I built for my Orks. Normally in games I use the little ammo runts that come in the Nobs box set but I figure something a lil more 'objective marker"ery would be more appropriate. So here they are.
And some close-ups:
As you can see they're just a mish-mash of bits from my bitz box, with a bit of cutting up, and drilling bullet holes and so on. Hard to think of Orks wantin to fight over bits of junk, but hey, gotta use something
My cutting skills are atrocious though, which is why the axe handles look real wonky.
But as always, comments are welcome

Wow! I really like those objectives! Theyre simple, yet clearly Orky.
And I wouldnt worry about Orks fighting over piles of junk.... Theyre Orks! Could be fighting for the boss' favorite stikkbomm or even just fighting because its there!
I like the kanz as well, but I feel myself echoing the previous "too much red" comment. Id like to see a bit more breaking up of the solid colors, but still they are well painted.
Keep up the good work.

These objective markers are perfect! Remember, Orks don't need a reason to fight, they'll just try to come up with something if they've got a minute, but even that's not always the case.... lol

Hey guys, just a small WiP update on my next Killa Kan, which is going to belong to the Bad Moonz.
On a black primered undercoated, I just basecoated Iyanden Darksun and Dheneb Stone so far, and that's about all I got for today.
This Kan is probably the 'craziest' I get with my conversions, as hes been given leftover rokkit launchas from the deff dreads, and the DCCW glued on top over his head like some crazy yellow scorpion. Also been playing around with my smartphone camera settings, see if I cant make the screenshots any better...
Enjoy!
And as always, comments welcome.

Thanks mate, but I actually' dont like it all that much. I just noticed the photo makes the yellow look better than it really is. On the model itself, there is too much of a stark contrast between the shades, the highlights and the mid-colour. Looks good at arms length, but on closer scrutiny, you get that '"Tron" effect.

New update, with some painted objective markers:
And the base of my Killa Kan is complete, with some freehand. Not a lot though, since there wasnt very many flat surfaces for me to make them with. Only notable example you can see is the black flame pattern on one of the rokkits. Only thing left to do on him is some weathering, but that'll come when the rest of his squadron is complete. So for the moment he's complete

Enjoy, and as always comments are welcome

They're pretty much done, except for a bit of weathering detail. Will get the old sponge out once I have a Bad Moonz Deff Dread painted up, and weather them all together
