At least 21 treated for burns after trying to walk on coals at Tony Robbins event
Published July 21, 2012
FoxNews.com

Fire officials in California say at least 21 people were treated for burns after attendees of an event for motivational speaker Tony Robbins tried to walk on hot coals.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that at least three people went to a hospital and most suffered second- or third-degree burns.

Jonathan Correll, 25, told the paper that he heard "screams of agony."

"It was people seriously hurting, like they were being tortured," he told the paper. "First one person, then a couple minutes later another one, and there was just a line of people walking on that fire. It was just bizarre, man."

Robbins was hosting a 4-day gathering called "Unleash the Power Within" at the San Jose Convention Center. Witnesses say on Thursday, a crowd went to a park where 12 lanes of hot coals were on the grass.

Robbins' website promotes "The Firewalk Experience" in which people walk on super-heated coals.

Fire Capt. Reggie Williams says organizers had an open fire permit and emergency personnel were on standby.

Other attendees reportedly successfully walked over the coals and called the experience life-changing.

"Overcoming something like that, it's a breakthrough," Henry Guasch, 19, told the paper. Guasch said he suffered a minor burn.

Evidently there really is a formula in preparing the hot coals. Mythbusters did an episode on it. It has to be the right depth, age, and makeup, or you burn the bleep out of your feet.

It also has a lot to do with how you walk across them. If you do it how you normally walk you should be fine. But if you drag your feet or try to run/speed walk through the coals youll burn the gak out of your feet. Like Adam did on that Mythbusters your talking about

Anthony Robbins, whenever I see that guy, he just makes me want to punt his head. There is just something about the shape of his head that cries out for a punting.

Maybe that's just me.

I imagine that if you were larger sort of gentlemen your feet might sink into the coals.

Also I wonder if this dude paid the firefighters for their time, or if the tax payer once again was forced to foot the bill for stupid people acting stupidly and getting hurt.

I'm confused as to why anyone would ever try to walk across hot coals. Then again I really hate burns because they blister.

Safe to say that most people feel the same.

I'm confused as to why anyone would ever try to walk across hot coals.

To prove themselves they can overcome their fears. What doesn't seem to register is that some things are rightly feared. Like burning your feet.

One question tho. Did that Tony Robbins dude go through the coals? And also ; after watching that Family Guy video, is it a possibility that he just wanted to cook the participant before his evening meal?

I read in some management journal a couple of years ago about a study into the actual value of motivational speakers like Tony Robbins on organisations. Predictably, despite almost all reporting much higher moral for a week or two after the motivator, no organisation showed any lasting result in any studied metric - morale, productivity, innovation, nothing. And that didn't change even when you got to the stupidly high priced motivators like Robbins (the article didn't mention him by name, but it was clear his six figure charge per conference charge was the one they were citing).

Turns out all that 'believe in yourself' 'be the change you want in the world stuff' is just empty rhetoric. Actual, lasting change is harder than hiring some charismatic guy to shout slogans at you.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Not surprising at all. Hell if it's just about feeling better, I'd rather do this : http://www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_the_game_that_can_give_you_10_extra_years_of_life.html than listen to someone I don't know talk about my personnal problems.

4 easy steps to make you feel better, and possibly lenghten your life expectancy (the stats behind that were a bit sketchy, or their use oversimplified, but still)
1) Stand up a few minutes every hours
2) Count down from 100 by steps of 7 at least every day
3) Look at pictures of cute stuff a few times a day (the important part is to keep a 3/1 positive to negative thought ratio)
4) Shake hands with people you meet.

I am confused why somone would walk on hot coals when the 20 people in front just barbequed their feet doing exactly that.

Tempted as I was to keep my mouth shut and look subtly hilarious, no, I have to come clean, I did not plan that. So, points to you, good sir, in pointing that out.

Yeah, that's what I asked a co-worker immediately after reading this the other day. They had 12 lanes to do this in, but 21 people burned themselves, assuming the first 12 were simultaneous... WTF were the last 9 thinking?

Money not well spent on their part. I'm sure Matty can do a proper job of it. Professional butt chewing with the occasioanal slander on their abilities to rise above expectation. Physical exertion beyond what they think they can do, fear of Matty verbal "wrath", fear of the pushing the ground below sea level, fear of creating wind power from side straddle hops (jumping jacks to those not fimiliar), fear of drawing Matty gaze upon them.....well...FEAR of Matty himself.

I on the other hand don't fear Matty himself. He lives to far away

I often think Matty is the person on Dakka with whom the most awesome time ever could be had, while simultaneously thinking Matty is the most likely person on Dakka with home doing the former will lead to you being arrested.
