How does preferred enemy work with a ballistic skill of 6 or better?

Do you re-roll ones on the second die roll?

You can never reroll a reroll, so no. So if the first die misses, you reroll and look for a 6 (or whatever the BS allows).

No, because you can't re-roll a re-roll.

The only benefit for those with a 6+ BS is the re-roll to wound on a 1.

I think that you shouldn't since only one single reroll is ever allowed. I see the possible problem, but actually I cannot think about something with both preferred enemy and BS >5

Yup, can't reroll a reroll, so BS 9 and twin linked kinda sucks too. Ofc it still helps on snapshots where your BS6 is now BS1

... But TL is useless (unless it's a snap-shot)

BS5 with TL is the same as BS 10 (with or without TL) and BS6-9 with TL, 2+ with reroll.

Pretty much this is what I meant.

BS 5 with TL = BS 9 with TL, so both together give you very little additional benefit. Sure, it's 2+ with a reroll so maybe "sucks" isn't really the best choice of phrase but if you're paying a price for BS 9 and paying a price for TL you're not going to get much for one of those 2 prices is what I was getting at.

If only getting one full reroll is the worst of your worries...

You would get to reroll at full BS if you wanted to. Lets lay this out:

You have a model with BS 7 and Preferred Enemy against whatever you are shooting at and roll a 1 To Hit. You now have 2 available options for rerolling, you can roll on a 5+ to recover the hit since you have BS 7, or reroll on a 2+ because of preferred enemy. You may only use one of these options since you may only reroll a dice once, but you get to pick which to use.

It has to be this way, other wise BS5 preferred enemy would be better than BS 6 preferred enemy.

So in this case, if you have a ballistic skill of 5 or better AND preferred enemy, then it's essentially the same as twin linked BS 5.

Thanks for the clarification guys!

Oddly enough, this is covered in the rule book -

Pg 13. "If a model has a special rule that already confers it a re-roll To Hit (like a master-crafted weapon, for example), then that re-roll takes precedence and the chart above is not used. Instead, the chance of hitting with the re-roll ts the same as the first shot, depending on the firer's BS. Remember, a dice can only ever be re-rolled oncel"

Bottom of the page below the BS chart.

Kevin has it. In theory you'd have to split any misses into two categories: 1's covered by Preferred Enemy, and other misses covered by your high BS. But since you have to have at least BS6 to get a BS-based reroll, you're only going to have missed with 1's anyway. Therefore all your misses will be affected by Preferred Enemy and will hit on a 2+.
As mentioned you then don't get to reroll that reroll. So, to miss you have to roll 2 1's in a row for the shot.
