So i went to my first tourney saturday, its a semi-casual one. We had quite a few proxies. But im wondering something. How do most tournments feel about that? Like if i was to take a sternguard veteran squad and give them all combi meltas(but not on the models) How would most tournies feel about this. Im asking this out of curiosity and hope i can someday go to big tournaments.

Most tournements require full wysiwyg but there are always exceptions.
As always ask your TO for more specificity but that has been the general trend I have noticed.

Here is my personal opinion on it as a TO.
I would ask that proxies have a reasonable similarity. So for proxieng a dreadnought a battle tech fig would be to small but a dust walker might be ok. Things like giving a squad grenades, who cares if they are actually on the model as long as your clear about what squad has it. Things like thunder hammers need to be hammers so they are easily seen and accounted for.

Depends on the event.
The one I go to locally is pretty lax, but I make myself do 100% wysiwyg (except toxin sacs on genestealers... a) that should just be assumed and b) those bits are so small I've lost the 5 I clipped off the sprue within seconds... plus they should be internal organs anyway).

Proxies slow down the game. Slowing down the game is unfair in timed events. Burdening an opponent during a competative game is unfair.
Most well-run tourneys require Full WYSIWYG. The only time when tourneys don't is usually due to the limitation of the store or the participant base where the event wouldn't happen otherwise without relaxed rules because the bulk of the local players lack the models to participate.
FULL WYSIWYG really makes gameplay drastically easier, faster and fairer to both players.

Proxies are fine. Especially if your showing up with a fully converted and painted army. It doesn't slow down the game IMO if you do it right. There usually is some list talk before a match so as long as you make it clear what it is your good.
Only thing is if your doing this you have to make it so units are uniform. Unit x is equipt with x. Unit y is the same as unit x so it looks exactly like unit x (with exception of base sides differentiating it or something). Unit Z is equipt differently and has to LOOK different from units X and Y.

I remeber the worst example of proxies I faced in a tournament was a guy using almost a full army of Battletech minis and Legomen with pencils to represent his Space Wolf army.
From turn to turn, he'd say they represented something different.
His level of skill was reflected by his proxies.

Well i guess if i do want to do some of the competitive lists i want to do in big tournaments i should just make the models themselve. Or come up with good lists with my own models
