Can a model without a standard take a magic standard? Specifically a skaven warlord taking a magic standard(he is not bsb) but no limitations are given in the codex. I would say no but what does dakka say? Thanks

Look at the entry in the army list in the back of the book. It will most likely say "this character may become a battle standard bearer for X points, he may then carry a magic banner."

And from the rulebook, page 503: "The only character permitted to carry a Magic Standard is the army's Battle Standard Bearer."

Taking the information from curran12 in regards to the OP, I do not believe a Skaven Warlord can be a BSB, however a Chieftain can. (If they are the same thing, forgive me, my Skaven-fu is weak)

If you dont have a standard, you cannot take a magic standard.

They are not. The Warlord is a lord, the Chieftain is a hero. As you said, only the Chieftain can be the BSB. The only skaven units that can take magic standards are:

1. The Chieftain BSB
2. One unit of Stormvermin per army
3. One unit of Plague Monks per army
