The biggest thing in painting Space Wolves is deciding *how* you want them to look. I went through a lot of iterations thinking "this doesn't look right to me" before I discovered the reason it didn't look right was because I never actually thought about how they should look.

In the end I decided on this scheme...

Sorry for the poor quality picture, I really need to take some better photos of my space pups.

That was done with white undercoat sprayed on, Mechanicus Standard Grey, paint nuln oil just into the crevices (not over the whole model), highlight with codex grey and it could probably use another highlight of a slightly lighter grey as well. The shoulderpad was done with my homebrew mix of blood red, mechrite red and scorched brown, and the left shoulder pad I did bone coloured (which you can't really see), that was Deneb Stone washed Devlan Mud and then went back over with Deneb Stone. The gold is balthasar gold washed nuln oil then highlighted shining gold, and then some details picked out in black.

I honestly can't remember how I did the fur on that particular guy, but typically a mix of drybrushes and washes of Deneb Stone, Calthan Brown (or whatever the equivalent is now) and Dryad Bark.

It's not a very good picture, but in the end it comes out looking similar to the Space Wolf on the front cover of the current Codex with dark and slightly purple reds, golds and the darker grey that isn't quite as blue as most Space Wolves.

Google: "Space Wolves painting tutorial"
Also try the same in Youtube.

Try out the search function here at dakka, I can remember at least 3 previous posts regarding this exact request (with loads of responses!)

Finally, good luck. Ultimately, the task is up to you to paint them. Whatever makes you happy, stick with it. Don't let others dissuade you with their own preferences. Don't be discouraged if you try to paint as well as these tutorials and your standards don't match your abilities. These things take time, and ever so much practice.

If, for some reason, you need to strip your miniatures, soak them in Dettol (no dilution). Won't harm the plastics in any way, and is safe to soak for any length of time. Soak for about 2 days, scrub with an old tooth brush, wash them with soap and water, and repaint.

Again, good luck.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

My main piece of advice is really think about the colours you want. Go to a hobby store and just look at the paint tins and think to yourself how would this look painted over an entire army with details in this colour or that colour. I ended up with my scheme because after much thinking I felt it really captured the nordic type feel, but before that I had a whole army of Space Wolves painted shadow grey and it wasn't until I was most the way through painting them I realised I really DON'T like shadow grey, at least not for a whole army.

I went through shadow grey, a much brighter space wolves grey then an almost black charcoal grey before finally settling on the Mechanicus Grey (which was Adeptus grey when I started painting them but Mechanicus is pretty close to identical).

Look around the web and find lots of pictures and figure out what you want it to look like and if you can find a guide, and if you can't find a guide maybe ask here and someone might be able to give you some guidance.
