I'm calling it as Ohio Senator Rob Portman. It gives Romney a much greater chance of taking Ohio, and its only with Ohio that Romney has a real chance of winning the election.

Also, going for a long shot is fun.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

My money's on Rubio. I think Romney will go with a safe choice.

Rice is interesting, but my feeling is he will avoid anyone associated with W's administration.

I'm thinking Rice be a good bet. As a counter towards Romney "policy". Heck they might get more done together then currently congress. Like find a middle ground on matter.

If Rice was going to be chosen as VP I'd bank on her doing it in 2016, especially if Jeb runs. Granted I don't know who is reasonable that Romney could get through the republican party that would help with moderates at this point.

I have to hand it to Rice, despite being a near unknown before coming into the Bush administration, she somehow managed to escape the complete destruction of her political reputation that every other cabinet member suffered... despite being at the centre of nearly every core feth up.

I mean, that's really quite an amazing thing. I wonder if she knows how she did it. How did Powell's reputation get so trashed he became unelectable, but Rice got out being talked about as a VP candidate.

Not that she's got any chance at all of ending up VP, but still.

Palin.

That's half-serious. I'm quite sure that he'll pick a woman, as the women's vote is going to be huge this time around, but I think there is absolutely zero chance that Romney would pick anyone who isn't white. Palin mirrors him on the conservative talking points, and helps Romney win over the hard-core, right-wing extremist insanity voters, who view him as a flip-flopping moderate. Plus it'll draw away from the 'Mormon' angle that no doubt alienates the hardcore born-again nuts. Palin gives Romney the ability to claim that he's the business brains, whilst she can be the down-home 'Merican values half of the tag-team.

EDIT: Or maybe I just like playing the long odds, too.

Powell was an assumed part of the cabinet of either Gore or Bush, because his appeal was across both sides of politics. It was expected that any cabinet position would be a stepping stone to a run at the Whitehouse. There's no guarantee he would have won, because there's always a batch of strong contendors (well except this last batch of Republicans) but he would have been given as good a chance as anyone else eyeing off a 2004 or 2008 shot.

But that never happened. He was tainted by Bush to the point where just doesn't get mentioned for political life at all, not even in the most speculative terms. His time in the Bush cabinet killed his political career.

And yet the same never happened with Rice. Despite everyone now knowing Powell was on the right side of the Iraq debate within the cabinet and Rice was on the wrong side, she survived with an enhanced reputation, and he lost his completely.

And Rice doesn't even want to run. The whole thing is just bizarre.

Powell action for resigning was a credit to himself. He was one of major key players for other governemt to commit troops to Iraq by showing the reports of WMD in Iraq to them. When no WMD's were found and the troops commited to the effort he personnaly felt responsible for involving them into a fight and resigned. That's off the top of my head. Powell were to run at a future date he has my vote

Romney eyes are so freaky black.....

There is so much wrong here it's almost scary. Powell time and again stated he had no intention of running for higher office. He didn't want to subject his family to what might come at them. Powell is still highly respected in America. His time with Bush didn't taint him politically. It tainted him personally I think on politics but that's completely different.

@jihadin

I think he'd still have quite a few people's votes. But he might suffer from what McCain suffered from when he ran with the current Republican party. He isn't nearly hardline enough for the current party to get a nomination so it's all moot anyway.

My personal hope is that he picks Herman Cain.

That would make TV interesting again for the next four months.

I'd say 2 things, first off his public support for the Iraq war and repeating debunked intelligence to the UN Security council made him toxic to democrats.

And his private opposition to the war, combined with his public support for Obama in 2008 made him toxic to republicans.

Rice is still toxic to anyone anti-Bush but at least she has been a loyal soldier and backed McCain in 2008.

I don't think she'd get it, she has a lot of vague good will but can't deliver a voting block.

Yeah, Romney's probably gonna pick a woman so he can say, "How could republicans oppose women's rights if I have a female VP?"
