I have been thinking about running some BT Assault marines, and I wonder.... are they worth it? They cost 4 points more then C:SM do, and have less equipment... but we can get 2 special weapons, plus a heavy (such as a PW, PF) and equip all marines with melta bombs for 3 points less then standard C:SM.

I typically run AAC for my VOW, so rage would help these guys in CC as well. Plus with the melta, they would be a good anti-tank squad too.

So what are your thoughts on BT Assault marines? Are they worth the 4 extra points???

more of a tactics than YMDC discussion, so......

I posted this in YMDC because I wanted to see if BT Assault marines are worth putting in to an army list. I am not too worried about there tactics....

YMDC is for discussing rule interpretations. It's not about discussing what's worth it or not.

That's what tactics is for.

So tactics are for equipment on your models, and points
cost?

I always just post army lists to get feed back on them... i never really use the other 40k threads.

First off tactics is where this goes...it really is. Army lists is for asking for help building a list where you have an idea or getting crtique on a list you already have. YMDC is for rule debates as to how something works not how you should run something. Tactics is for if you should run something or general tabletop strategies w/ certain armies and against certain armies.

Now for the question in particular. I wouldn't spam SS but putting one on the fist isn't a bad idea and assault marines are fluffy but I think they get outdone by bikes. I mean bikers have more special weapons/power weapons a higher toughness and get to move the same distance as assaults but still get Hammer of Wrath.

Now with assaults you still need cover unless you want an unkillable (esentially) marshal upfront so I'd suggest vindicators. They are good at tank hunting w/ melta bombs so that would be the plus over bikes so if they are dedicated to that role then fine, but without melta guns I wouldn't run them that much personally.

BT uses the Codex Astartes as toilet paper. They’re an Imp Fist successor, recruit from multiple planets, and are known to be the largest Chapter in the galaxy. They’re on a constant Crusade, keeping it real for the Emperor and not bumming around like the other guys. They hate psykers and can’t ally with them. They’re basically an entire chapter of Chaplains. CC lunatics. What every Space Marine should aspire to be, if not trapped in a Matt Ward nightmare.

Thank you for clearing that up more Akroma06. I looked at the fourms to where to post it, and I just went with YMDC, cause I dont really know what all the different areas are. I just figure... " should i take them or not" -- you make the call. It made sense in my head! lol.

Yeah, I am really mixed on weather or not I should try them out or not... Melta bombs are only 2 points, so they are cheap for BT, so its 23 points for a C:SM to have melta bombs, compared to 24 for BT. With that said, I think a 5 man squad can do some damage to a vehicle with melta bombs.... if they get close enough.

BT assault marines give you more speed, something BT infantry players tend not to have. Add in the ability to take melta bombs on everyone, toss in a chaplin, and there's next to nothing you can't assault with them.

They are a scary tank hunting squad with all around melta bombs. 10 Str8 AP1 attacks hitting on 3+ with Armorbane will destroy most vehicles outright. And Monstrous Creatures won't be any happier either.

I would say they are worth it. Use them to tie up enemy units(or kill things that arn't cc units) and also to kill specific vehicles.

Since they only get 1 attack w/ MBs anyway, they end up being 5 pts cheaper than their SM counterparts if they were loaded up with MBs (which isn't an option anyway). More options generally means more points, as you end up more versatile. Plus, your PFs cost 10 points less than SM, you just have one less attack with it. Is 10pts worth that extra attack, on a guy who can't be singled out in a challenge? Your call. I don't think they're that bad, honestly.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Right behind you...

They are actually quite good, they cost only 6 points more than their Initiate counterparts, have an extra attack for being jump infantry, can quickly close in with the enemy, can move very quickly across the board, and are a very dangerous choice when equipped with a Power Fist and Melta bombs. Take a Master of Sanctity with them for Unmatched Zeal, and they will destroy everything from medium tanks to Carnifexes.

Plus the get to re-roll there assault charge if they fail, because of the jump packs. I think this is a pretty decent squad. I need to play test them though.

Also they will have rage, so my 1 attack powerfist, will have 3 on the charge , but only for the charge.

How does armorbane help with a MC? I am not sure I understande that rule. I mean, against vehicles I understand it.

You can use melta bombs against MC's, combo that with a chaplin in their unit and laugh across the board.

I feel they are still a little soft. They are now a useful assault unit given that you can no longer assault out of rhinos, suddenly it is a lot harder to tie up the enemy.
They can be used well, if it fits your style.

Still typhoons will do a lot more good for most lists for the points.
