I figured I'd mix my obsession with tattoo art and 40k, this is an idea of what i was going for. Any requests are appreciated, but they'll be drawn like a traditional tattoo.
I need to clean up the drawing a bit more but i think it gets the gist across.

It's a nice idea but most of the 40k and fantasy tats I have done, the customer didn't ask for a re-draw. They just brought me the design they wanted. Also I live in a smallish Texas city and my gaming group ain't huge. I like what you have here and my only critique is to round the corners on the banner.

Why the flower? Just to make it more cliche? The cracked helmet with "The Emperor Protects" is decent tattoo fodder, but the flower is too overdone.

I wasn't being rude, I was saying the flower makes it look really cliche. The rest of the design works just fine. It doesn't matter whether I can do better or not, that shouldn't make something exempt from criticism.

I dont think he was being rude. And i kind of agree with him. The flower doesnt fit, IMO. For tattoos.. i like simplicity

Then your responce should have been " Why the flower? It seems cliche to me...".

And he said in the OP that he was "mixing" tattoo art and 40k. Thar be a few roses in tattoos.

I assume he meant a tattoo art style, rather than the cliche tattoo art we see on TV. The helmet and banner are stylized a bit towards that art style, and they look good. They don't need to rely on cheesy cliches like roses, barbed wire, snakes coming out of the eyes, or anything of the sort.

And my response could have been that, but it wasn't. It's not really a point of contention.

You forgot "tramp stamps", butterflies, dragons, tigers, hearts, banners, swallows with banners on chests, yadda yadda lol.

I'd want to get something like:

I say drop the flower, the rest of the design is great if you want to add to the tatt I say go for maybe the chapter you run...but other than that stick with just the helmet and banner...

Maybe a few spent bolt shells instead of the flower. It would fit with 40k more that way.

The bolter doesn't use shells... Its basically a mini rocket.

"Bolter ammunition (a bolt) is primarily a solid .75 calibre slug. Conventional solid slugs utilise a propellant charge contained in a casing that, when ignited, forces the bullet out of the barrel. In contrast, a bolt is self-propelled; it features its own integrated solid propellant that propels the bolt at high speeds, essentially acting like a miniature rocket."

Back on topic: I like the helmet and the banner, possibly add your chapter symbol instead of the flower?

Bolts are both shells and missiles. They are NOT caseless and havn't been since 2nd eidition.

They have an initial stage with an explosive propellent like a normal bullet and a secondary rocket stage.

There is more then enough reference to bolters having ejected shell casings.

Examples include...

The spent bolt rounds in the AoBR set.

The heavy bolter in the space marine movie.

Artwork in codexs.

And many more.

Are you referring to ones on the dread base? I didn't get the AoBR. In the same movie, you can see the rocket proportion, ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRbrFsC-kUs ) yes you can also see shell casings. But when is a movie completely accurate? I'm sure all of the artists for the codex have read every single bit of fluff from the past before making a work of art. I am unsure as to why you got bent out of shape when my statement has been supported by past fluff. Yes, I know fluff changes.

To the OP: I like you drawing skills, I could never sketch anything like that by hand, I would rely too much on my knowledge of Illustrator and photoshop. Kudos.

Black Reach comes with a few sets of spent shell casings to glue to bases. Shells also fly out of the guns in all the 40k videogames, including both Dawn of War games and Space Marine.
