Subject: Toll the great bell once! a largely Mechanicus log....
|
 |
Long-Range Land Speeder Pilot
|
So i've been toying with the idea of doing the adeptus mechanicus for about 12 months, i had planned to not start it until i completed my traitor guard budgie army (6 flyers, 5 squads, hq, 3 units of ratlings) but i popped into my local shop yesterday and havoc ensued. I've now decided to cement this as one of my active project branches. I'm still working on the list, but it'll be 1500 points of count as necrons. Most of these will be heavily modified to become the unit's in question, however as it stands i have 3 units, two of which i'm building and one unopened. Here are my initial WIP pictures.
I've developed half a wraith into the ad-mec pilot and sculpted him into place, as well as removed the necron icongraphy. The next stage will be to bulk it up and make it, if anything, more incestoid. My general insperation will be the Matrix machines and machine city, but i still want that imperial Grimdark feeling in massive quantities. The other unit, i should mention, that's shown is a knight titan that'll become a monolith count as.
Any suggestions, feedback and comments welcome, but at this early stage all i seek is feedback on how people think the pilot looks now he's got the full robes going.

Im liking it good start!
However, i cant help but feel these are looking a bit too necron-y atm. I think less of the necron flowing curves and more imperial blocky straight lines would do you wonders here.
Nevertheless, im looking forward to seeing more!
The gs robes on the pilot look good as well, nice sculpting.

Most of the work in those photo's went into the upper chassis. I don't want to change the lower body too much, i kind of like it. I have however been working on making it sit a little higher up, trying to get more of a crustation feeling going. Hopefully it may resolve some of your reservations.
Now for the update; I've got it bulked up to a point where it'll go orky if i push it any further, i've added all the little bits i could to make it seem less refined... more imperial clunkyness. I've still got some touch ups and sanding to do, not to mention drilling barrels, but this is the majority of the model done.
C&C welcomed,

Ok you've convinced me!
Looks a lot better, the added imperial bits really do take it away from necron. I particularly like that techy bit in between the plasticard in front of the pilot.
One think i think you could do is slap rivets all over the legs. Nothing says Imperial technology like rivets absolutely everywhere.

I thought about rivets but i did rivets to death with my ork army. i still have nightmares about it.... glad you like that though. I designed it as a sublte nod to a wierd life support rig, the idea that it's pilot is as much the machine as he is a human.

Teaser time, i've begun work on a second drone. It's not going to be a quick update as i have a private commission i'm working on in the background to complete first.

Great stuff so far! Loving the drones especially, very unique and have a distinct ad-mech feel to them. Any plans of infantry yet? I know Blight Wheel miniatures have some great looking stuff in the works including a stalk tank that looks quite like your own creation, unfortunately it seems they can't keep up with demand and are constantly out of stock! Linky anyway! http://blightwheelminiatures.jumpseller.com/

yeah they've turned a bit hunched since i've designed it to fit on to a CD size base. Hopefully it will look less awkward once i've build a suitable base.

Oh i've seen a few of those and been tempted by the ivan and demitri models, but i do have some plans... see below.
Update time; it's time for a rough potential design for necron warrior/servitors.
i've got one other design in mind, but i need to get my hands on some catachan parts... it'll be alot more traditional servitor in apperance.
I'd also ask you to check out this vampire counts army i'm selling, i could use the funds and space for this project. Link
Any feedback on the servitor's rough design would be nice, but i'm not expecting much.

One little thing would be the gun clearly looks too necron in origin. If you could make something that looked closer to a graviton gun i think youd be right on the money:

I got drawn in by the ad mech goodness here. It's looking really impressive! Great conversion work too, I agree that you've managed to tone down the necron feel perfectly. The servitor test looks good, very unnatural, but then ad mech aren't exactly great believers in natural forms! Keep it up, I'll be keeping an eye on this one very closely! Also interested to see more of the big walker, that looks very inspiring, I want to do something similar so I may borrow anything you learn from yours.

Now, i don't usually like to post without an update, it's just no fun, but i need help.
i'm currently trying to think up a design for a necron night scythe... without using the NS, a valk or stormtalon as a base for it. I want to use something different from the run of the mill plastic flyers. I am debating scratch building a thunderbolt and using that, but if anyones got any suggestions please let me know!

The walker definitely looks alot more Imperial than Necron now. My suggestion: shave off the little symbols on the top of the legs, maybe GS the recesses in the joints. Again, these are just suggestions, things I would do to make it more AdMech, but otherwise, it looks great.
The Servitor-Dog thing is definitely creepy looking. What is it representing table-top wise?

i did consider that, but i actually like the aesthetic it currently has... the necron leg's are just removed enough from mainsteam imperial design without any excessive symbology to work for my tastes.
Update time! I've got the army list drawn up for a 40k doubles tournie. I'm running a 10 man warrior squad in a night scythe, 5 man immortal squad in night scythe, monolith and lord. I've got most of the models planned, the monolith is being represented by a knight titan, the flyers are storm talons... the warrior unit is the ghoulitors and the immortals.... well, let's keep them secret for the moment as i've got quite a nice plan. Anyways, test scheme on a ghoul, i'm not keen on the model, but i need to buy some more parts before i continue with the unit, this guy won't be making the final 10, but it's given me a half descent shot at making a test scheme. Thoughts?

I'd suggest using milliput rather than greenstuff to fill up large holes, like on the stalker legs. MUCH easier to smooth and doesn't shrink. You can sand it when it's set too.

@Dr.t; defiler body, some bits out of my box for the base.
So guys i need some help.
I bought these pair from ebay in a spure of the moment bid, got them for a fairly low price so i figured i'd challange myself.
Now i need help designing and picking a scheme. I haven't got a clue what i want to do, other than something with a very incectiod nature to it. I've taken a look into various warning schemes and bugs that i can figure or google, but my knowledge in the area is fairly limited. Here's the colourings i've pegged so far;
Now don't let this limit you, i want people to throw as many idea's, but in colour and shapes (i like converting so i'll be looking for more as i develop forces over the next... well, however long).
so.... any idea's?

You should also look at poisonous frogs. Very bright colors, which all mean they're very dangerous to handle, probably down-right lethal for humans.

Now for a long awaited update. The army is off the shelf and back on the fore, and first up is a unit of Servitors (necron warriors), i've so far done three test models. Note i am waiting for them to cure before i go back in and neaten them up, similarly remove the mold lines that seem to have escaped my eyes the first time.
I'm making around 25 of these, and 10 skitarii.... what do we think?

well, i won't lie i was actually hoping to see at least one or two comments giving me some feedback on my skitarii. Oh well, i've plunged into the depths anyway and am nearly done putting the first squad together. Here's what i've got so far for this army;
Feedback is still welcome, though i'm also planning to build a ghost arc in a similar style to the beast at the end of the matrix revolutions.
I think it might work, so i'm going to make a shot at it down the line.
