First off, hit their website:
http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en
D/L the rulesets and army builder. Then see what faction grabs your fancy. There's no single OP faction.
Painting-wise, they're far finer in scale and details than most GW offerings, and you'll have fewer, as well. By and large, they're armies of SCs.

First of all, welcome to the club! I hope you enjoy your stay here.. don't forget your cube, and remember not to hug the Krazy Koalas, no matter how cute they look

There is actually a sticky in this section which provides some info for beginners: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/440048.page

Best and most simple advice I can give? Take a look at all of the miniature ranges, see which one grabs you the most and you imagine that you will enjoy collecting, and then go from there! As AmmishJohn said, there is no real 'best faction' in the game, and most can be adapted for different play styles.

Welcome! Based on your signature and Avatar I'll assume you've had some 40k background.

Things to note about Infinity.

1. There are no real gimmicks with each of the factions, they can in most ways play to a play style that you want.

2. Basic weaponry can kill, Heavy Infantry and even TAGs are not immune.

3. It's more important to learn how to play than what to put in your army list. List building is far less important than it is in other games.

If you're looking for a faction, look no further than Yu-Jing. We have the safest cities, the best technology, the most well trained military and the most silenced politcal dissidents in all of the Human Sphere. This message has been brought to you by the Imperial Ministry of Information.

Seriously though, I'd go for the faction I like the look of the most or the one with the fluff that appeals to me the most.

As said above, its all about what looks good to you. Yes, there are different playstyles for the different factions (he says from reading reports, having not played the game yet ), but all the different factions are very well balanced against each other. So, again, look at the models and then go from there.

also, seconding the 'beginners' Thread that Pacific posted, theres some VERY good stuff in there...

Welcome to Dakka!
