I've been trying to improve the overall quality of my tanks, and this is my test case. You can see my original razorbacks and tanks here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/424022.page

This one has a new weathering technique and mud splattering, and some additional freehand work on the side panels. I'd really like any ideas on how I can add to my design to improve it further. (I was thinking about possibly attempting some sort of OSL lighting effect around the headlights and plasma gun). Any C + C and advice wouldbe well appreciated.

I love this army, great job on the freehand eagles, I cant freehand for the life of me! are they vanilla marines or blood angels successors?

As in that's a bad thing? It's a pretty flag.

Thanks very much everyone! Their background is blood angels successors who don't keep very close ties with the others. Partly due to the fact that they replaced their original sanguinius-orientated heraldry with a lot of big white eagles...

Is the new weathering and extra heraldry better than my original razorbacks? I was thinking of upgrading all of them to this sort of look.

Does anyone have any opinions or tips on how to improve any part of the paint job / modelling? I'd really appreciate any pointers on my weaknesses!

Yeah, from some angles it makes you think of the (beautiful) Rising sun flag, but in others, where you see the whole thing, it makes me think of

ALl that aside, great freehand work! I wish I could give some pointers, but you are much better than I am, and I wouldn't dare try freehand like this..

Thanks very much mr Purifier, but I'm afraid I have no idea what that flag / icon is Can someone enlighten me?

TBH, the large eagle isn't too hard to do. Just sketch out a design on paper, paint an outline onto the model and keep correcting it until it looks symetrical. Then keep on going over the design in layers of skull white until you go insane.

Might I suggest drilling out the exhaust pipes?

Excellent job, I wish I could free-hand like that.

I do ba successors too, their symbol is a sheild with a blood drop, but it always ends up looking like a smiley face, WHY IS THAT!!!!!

...stupid models...

Nice freehand work. The eagles and scripture really make this tank look decorated and full of history.

Great crisp paintjob, the red especially is v.good. The Las-plas is a neato conversion as well, looks 'store-bought'.

Unfotunately on the modelling side i hate the guy poking out the hatch. (How'd he even fit with that backpack?). Though you can temper this with the fact i hate all crew in GW vehicles; I paint over canopies and all my raiders are crew-less.

I really like it, though if you're looking to add more "stand out parts" (as if those wicked awesome eagles weren't enough) to it you could always consider:

- Red & white checks up ther exhaust towers
- White side doors with red eagles (possible sons of orar cross over though [colour scheme only, not eagles])
- Drill the exhausts, add smoke (cotton wool, or the cinematic effects from armour cast)
- White 'depressions' at either end of the track armour with red decor

These are just a couple of thoughts that occur when you ask, I don't think by any means that your models look anything but excellent, they're inspiring, though I hope the above helps in some way

Keep up the wicked work man, I love it

Thanks very much for the advice, everyone - really handy to know what peoples favorite and least favorite parts are!

I think I will definitely be drilling the exhaust stacks and barrels at some point. They would look that much more realistic (although I'm not sure how well it would work on those metal plasma guns...).

I also think some sort of painted smoke effect around the side vents would be good - I'll have to google around for some decent techniques. I probably won't go too overboard though - the tank is starting to look quite busy!

Thanks for your ideas, Mr Kitch. I'm very tempted to try some checks on the exhaust towers... Although I may keep the idea on hold until I get the imperial guard allies I was thinking of. I'm going to experiment on how to brighten them up a bit.

Might experiment with some gloss varnish on the lenses and a black wash over the metal areas - guess I've got a lot to keep me occupied!

It's good... very good... but could be better!

Buy miniature eagles and mount them flying around the tank!

Put a nest on the back!

Have mice running from them on the underside of the vehicle!

Put a real feather on the back to catch the wind!
