Hey Dakka, I want to start buying some daemons as allies for my csm. I've always wanted to start the army but have never had an excuse to. I just picked up the codex along with the new WD stuff and was wondering what units would work well as allies? I really like the look of the tzeentch and khorne stuff and can't really stomach nurgle. Slaanesh is middle ground. Are any of the fast attack units worth their points or should I just stick with my squad of nurgle csm bikers?

If you tell us what your typical CSM list is, and what kind of armies you usually play against, we can probably give better advice.

ah okay.

My current csm list so far is:

1 chaos lord
-mok, terminator armour

5 terminators (modeled with power axes)

12 khorne berserkers
-rhino w/ havoc launcher

14 1ksons
1 asp sorcerer w/ doombolt

5 csm bikers
-mon
-2 plasmaguns
1 defiler

This gives me about 500 points to spend on daemon allies. I found the heavy slot daemon prince in the daemon codex very expensive but am considering having a hit and run flying prince for character killing.

As for armies I play against...wide variety. There isn't much of a meta around here and there is a wide range of armies and skill level.

The new Screamers are very over powered. I'd suggest taking a unit of 9.

Also Flamers are too good not to take now they are only 23 points each.

Ok so I think I'll drop my expensive bike squad for a unit of 9 screamers. I dunno if I'll have the points to fit flamers unless they perform well in small squads.

For the HQ and troop I was thinking a unit of 10 bloodletters and a herald of khorne.

What would be a cost effective build for a daemon prince?

A squad of 5 plaguebearers is great for back field objecties it would let your two more expensive marine squads go for objectives closer to the enemy.

For a tzeentch prince, bolt, one other shooting attack, shooting upgrades. But its not cheap. Heralds could be a better option. Chariots are great all round, and the option of 2.
Khorne princes, wings, might, anything else is an option.

I really don't know why you would take any others unless your playing to fluff with nurgle and slaanesh is just not as killy as khorne.
With rending this night not be the case depending what you face, but I have no codex to hand.
I imagine it would make for a decent assassin but I can't see the points really paying off.
I'd rather take fiends for the mass rending.

@DonerStoom: Slaanesh and Nurgle princes are both better killers than Khorne. Khorne gives +1 attack and can get a 2++ against psychic attacks and force weapons, but that's really it. Slaanesh and Nurgle can get assault/defense grenades with additional abilities, wound on 2+, hit and run, opponents lose attacks, move opponent's unit around, area of effect damage, etc, etc. One additional attack from a Khorne prince doesn't really hold up to all that.

@OP: Flamers are cheap and can massacre pretty much anything (just keep them away from unit-wide storm shields, you'll be set), Screamers are amazing now, and since you have a lot of shooting attacks already from CSM, maybe adding in some Daemonettes for lots of cheaper attacks with rending to deal with tanks and weaker troops. Fiends are also good, and probably better as an ally than flamers just because of the 1 unit limit. Flamers should be a couple of units, really. I second the 9 screamers for fast attack though-they kill EVERYTHING well.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I always felt the nurgle prince was just out classed by the other choices. Unless you run 2 or 3 with epidemus, then there beautiful. I also may have confused some bits with greater daemons as I wrote that in the wee hours of the morning :p

But personally I like to have demons show up turn 1 and blast all my friends dark eldar transport out the sky.
Anything but tzeentch just doesn't cut it for me here.
Come turn 2 his super fast dark eldar are being charged in his own deployment.

I think this tactic can do well against most forces with light transport.
Not sure if a land raider will take this kind of thing on the chin.

Ok so I tried the following list today against tau, I won but I didn't have much left at the end

1 khorne terminator lord

14 1ksons
1 sorcerer w/ two powers

12 plaguemarines
2 plasma guns

1 defiler

ALLIES

1 herald of khorne
1 mounted herald of slaanesh

10 bloodletters

10 pink horrors

8 seekers (had the models, wanted to try them)

1 flying slaanesh daemon prince with musk

skysheild landing pad

The list worked pretty well with my 1ksons squad and plaguemarines soaking up shots. At one point, thanks to the landing pad and warlord traits, both squads had 3+/4++ with feel no pain. The defiler hasn't really being pulling its weight and I might scrap it for a terminator squad (same points). The daemon prince did well but I didn't get to really do my planned "kill character, hit and run on opponent's turn" since tau run away like children when you kill 1. The whole fearless army thing was awesome.

Seekers were awful..died to overwatching kroot but I did get to place an order for the 9 screamers for the end of this week so I'll try those instead. The list is looking good and I was happy with the game results.
