Hey dakka
i'm after some advise on what i could do improve my latest list that i tested at a local tournament on sunday. I had a bye for the first game and for the second game i was up agaisn a chaos list with berserks in a rhino and so spawn with some normal chaos space marine + chaos lord, the hydras dominated and i won easyly. In the third game i went against a good friend that had elder. he had avatar, 3 warwalker with scatter and a heap of guardians. This game was was very close and i would have won if the games were stopped . But any way here is my list for the tournament what improment do you think i can make for the next one?

750pt Imperial Guard 5th Ed (2009) Roster (Standard)

Selections:

HQ (70pts)

Primaris Psyker (70pts)
Discipline of telepathy

Spoiler:
Thinking about dropping this guy for a command squad or lord commissar because he was pretty much giving away the kill the warlord objective

Pro: Help kill a squad a squad of berserks with Terrify

Con: gave away Kill the Warlord and psychic sucked

Troops (390pts)

Infantry Platoon (190pts)
Heavy Weapons Squad (60pts)
3x Mortar

Spoiler:
This squad was good and did help the hydras to kill anything that was hiding behind LOS blocking terrian apart from that did not do to much else, think about upgrading them to autocannons

Pro: Help kill units behind LOS blocking terrain

Con: Missed most of the time

Infantry Squad 1 (50pts)
Sergeant
Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol

Spoiler:
The infantry squads did there job well, they slowed down assault themed army so that the remainder of my forces could pick of what was left

Pro: Did it's job which was to slow down assault units

Con: Died a bit to quickly but there is not much that I could do about that

Infantry Squad 2 (50pts)
Sergeant
Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol

Spoiler:
This squad did the same as the first Infantry squad

Platoon Command Squad (30pts)
Platoon Commander
Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol

Spoiler:
The platoon command squad was good a buffing the Infantry squads with orders but in general died pretty quickly. Normal i would give this squad snipers to hurt lone characters

Pro: Buffed Infantry squads and slowed down an avatar for a turn

Con: Did not to much else

Veteran Squad (100pts)
3x Meltagun (30pts), 6x Shotgun
Veteran Sergeant
Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol

Spoiler:
This squad did take out a couple of small units but there job was mainly to take out any walkers and transports and they did this well, next time i think i will drop the shotguns for lasguns

Pro: help stop a lot of units from doing a lot more damage them what they would have done

Con: did not need meltas

Veteran Squad (100pts)
3x Meltagun (30pts), 6x Shotgun
Veteran Sergeant
Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol

Spoiler:
This squad went around in the Vendetta and was mainly there to ether do a last diched deep strike on the objective or to deep strike behind with the metlas and get the rear armour of any artillery

Pro: if there was one more turn the would have won me the game if the game had not been stop because we ran out of time

Con: they did not have much action in the second game

Fast Attack (140pts)

Vendetta Gunship Squadron (140pts)
Vendetta (140pts)
2 Twin-linked Lascannons, Sponson Heavy Bolters (10pts)

Spoiler:
The vendetta was great, with the tactic i was using(fly on at an angel than shot then fly off and repeat) all of the enemy fire was concentrated and now of the shot did anything.

Pro: it was a great way to out maneuverer my opponent and just keep them occupied

Con: none that i could thing of but a astopate? could help with reserve rolls

Heavy Support (150pts)

Hydra Flack Battery (75pts)
Hydra Flack Tank (75pts)
Heavy Bolter

Spoiler:
the hydras were great they put out a huge amount of hitting power and taking very little because of there 72" range

Pro: they were the star off my army and by the end of the games people feared them.

Con: only problem is that i did not have more.

Hydra Flack Battery (75pts)
Hydra Flack Tank (75pts)
Heavy Bolter

Spoiler:
Same as first

HI there,

Reading through your list and battle report, i think you could of been more cost effective with your points. I think your heavy weapons choice for platforms were all wrong, as basic you want really auto cannons, they are good at taking down light armoured vehicles, and most of the time can ruin enemy teams, providing they are no power Armour.

Personally i think you should of taken a command squad as they have a few more options open to them rather than the psyker. the extra orders you have can help your army be more effective. With the standard IG unit i would recommend merging them into a larger unit for a decent meat shield and then provide them with a commissar to stop them running.

They vets that you used are a common sight, however it seems 1 of the squads didn't have a dedicated transport, meaning that giving them no doctrines with melta's and no transport you wasted 100 pts which you could of spent on another Heavy weapons platoon.

Now the hydras, i haven't seen these used in the new rules however, they seem to me a bit useless as i understand any auto cannon comes with flak shells? again you could of utilized these points more with a unit of sentinels (in a fight they won't prioritize these compared to your hydras).

On an extra note, if you want to use weapons like the mortars and other artillery i would recommend starting with basilisks/plasma cannon sentinels, and then mass long range weapons like the auto cannon to keep them at bay while you are firing everything. or in bigger games get a player to offer a meat shield for your heavy weps like space marines etc.

Thanks,

Liam
