I want to add in a couple of the Mercs to my standard Yu Jing army. The way i read the rules (in the main book) is that if i take a merc i then have different AVAs for the rest of my army.

Does this apply even if i'm not taking men from 3 different factions?

Can i just add in a merc or two into a standard Yu Jing list without losing the AVAs?

Thanks for the help!

Any troop with the classification "Mercenary Troop" can be taken in a regular force (i.e. one chosen from a single faction at normal AVAs), provided you're not playing a tournament.

This is assuming your opponent agrees, of course - not that there's any strict rule that says "Get your opponent's permission". It's just a case that an opponent gets to veto any list choice (legal or illegal) you make, simply by refusing to play against you. Given that Mercs can unbalance things, not everyone's happy to play against them, so it's not a bad idea to ask first.

There are a few mercs that are restricted by the parent lists. But, really, in friendly games it doesn't matter.

Some sectoral armies can take tourny-legal mercs too, like the Ariadna Scots can have their berserk wolfman McMurrough.

What you were describing were the rules for a Mercenary army; one that doesn;t fit any of the current factions. It allows you to combine models from any 3 (human?) factions into a new force.

What mercs were you thinking of adding Emperor's_Champion?

I've thought of doing a similar thing, perhaps having Haqq Djanbazan (who work in space a lot) working with Nomads and things like that, I think it's possibly to make some quite characterful use of Mercs if you have a read through the background and choose combinations that are appropriate.

Perhaps something like a Lizard TAG, co-opted into the Yu-Jing (and with Japanese writing on it), would look pretty awesome!

Well the 4 mercs who i think complement my Yu Jing style are probably Father Lucien, Senor Massacre, Saito Togan and Miyamoto Mushashi.

As far as mixing up the other factions i've not really looked too hard at that. I do have a Haqqislam force which when i find the euthiasium to actually paint them (i'm hooked on Yu Jing atm) I shall look into different mercs.

If it's any help, Saito Togan and Miyamoto Mushashi are tourney legal for JSA, and Father Lucien is tourney legal for Imperial Service.

I'm very interested in Lucien myself because he has access to the gluegun.

Lucien Sforza is ~90% of the reason I play Imperial Service at all.

The change of AVAs only applies if you want to create a whole Merc army. You can choose also troops from 3 other armies with that limited AVA. But if you are using 1 army list, and you want to add Mercs from the Mercs army list, those restrictions to the AVA of your other minis are not needed.
