Loyal. The traitors in the Horus Heresy series almost unanimously betray for inane and stupid reasons.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Almost unanimously?

I wouldn't call the thousand sons reason for betrayal stupid, they needed to run somewhere... so I think almost unanimously is a good way to put it.

Indeed. While Magnus was stupid, his reasons at least made sense-- and in the end a lot of it was Horus' manipulation.

If only Horus himself wasn't pathetic in his motivations.

To be fair these are books written to drive model sales, not fine examples of high literature.

I couldn't decide so I picked both. While I admire the fervor of the Space Marine to protect the Imperium, I can also appreciate the 'rebelliousness' of the Traitor legions. Its like with my Catholic Faith... I dig some of the stuff involved but there I times I still wonder and question the 'integrity' of it all.

Prior to reading the Horus Heresy series, I sided with the Traitors.

The Emperor expected the Primarchs to fight and die for him, for no reward at all. He placed ludicrous expectations and responsibilities on them, while simultaneously neglecting them. I was always surprised more Primarchs didn't turn traitor.

After reading the Horus Heresy series, I have to side with the loyalists. All of the traitors are insane. Horus turns traitor because he's shown a vision (by a person he knows is lying to him) where there might not be a statue of him on one courtyard in 10,000 fething years. Fulgrim turns traitor because a sword he knows is evil says it will be fun.

Mortarion turns traitor for no fething reason because the authors forgot about him. Perturabo turns traitor because he wants to stop fighting siege warfare, yet he spends the next 10,000 years still fighting siege warfare. Angron turns traitor cuz..... he's angry. Lorgar turns traitor because the Emperor doesn't want to be worshiped.

The only Traitor Primarchs that weren't complete fethers were Magnus and Alpharius.

I took that role playing quiz and saw that i'm a paladin and honestly it makes sense. I find that i would rather fight for one great leader who protects us from the forces of evil then join up with uncaring and vile gods who will eventually consume my soul when i eventually die in their name...

also asthetically i'm not a fan of the horns and spikes and severed heads and overall attitude of the traitors. i would've found that cool when i was 14 but at 25 i'm just meh (although i do read the disgusting description of the great unclean one for a lauch now and then)

The Emperor wasn't a great leader. He expected billions of soldiers to live and die for him, for absolutely no reward. In the end, the Emperor was only it for himself. That why, once the Imperium was stabilized, he just relaxed on Terra and made Horus carry out all his dirty work.

At least with Horus you have the infinitely small chance of becoming a Daemon Prince or at least some sort of Chaos Champion.

I guess my guard would be considered traitor. The leader of the Second Imperium has a goal of getting to Holy Terra and freeing the Emperor's corpse from the Golden Throne. He feels the Empire has decayed and strayed from the pure intent that it was formed under. His army still fights in the name of the Emperor. They battle the forces of Chaos, they battle the various Xenos threats, they battle to protect and defend the worlds of the Empire.

So while they are traitor, they are also loyal.

I only play loyalists marines, though that's because I like they're aesthetics far more than I like the Chaos Marines with the possible exception of the Night Lords. But when it comes to why the primarchs rebelled, I would say that several of them had good reason to. Magnus because the Emperor pretty much shoved his foot up his pipe and told him to beg for more, Lorgar, my personal favourite of the primarchs, because the Emperor destroyed his favourite world as well as his raison d'etre, and the Night Lords primarch knew that the Emperor would send an assassin one day. Those all seem like decent reasons to try and kill your father.

Die? For the Imperium, do you mean? No. I would no sooner die for the Imperium, nor the rotting corpse they blindly worship, than I would for the horrific beings that we have come to know as Chaos. This heresy, as you have called it, is just. It is our only means for survival. Our last resort, to escape the tyranny of the Imperium. The tithes of crops, arms, and troops you so swiftly demanded, we were happy to oblige to protect our fellow beings. But we knew not who you were then. We knew not the evils that lurked in your hearts. Even after you tried to have my Master killed, we knew not. But we learned. We learned of the horrors that awaited us beyond our protected solar system. Not only from our enemies, but from our newfound "friends" in the Imperium. This is why. You... are why. Your very purpose for being is tantamount to the most terrible atrocities the galaxy has seen. Go, then. Return to your home, and live. But be forever warned. Our mercy is not without limit. Should we lay eyes upon you again, our vengeance will be swift, for the horrors your kind have plunged our world into, demand justice.

Personally, I'd sooner kill heretics for the Emperor than die for the Imperium.

But then again, you know the old saying, better the enemy die for my nation than I die for my nation.

He wasn't relaxed. He was working on a better way to travel than the warp.

Traitors ftw!
I prefer the 40k traitors who left the imperium because they are sick of its current state.
In the Horus Heresy I sympathise with the loyalists, especially characters in situations like Loken or the loyalist IW who had to fight off an invasion and had the inverted mountain, or the ultramarines in Know No Fear (first and only time ive been on the side of the smurfs!)
Thanks to my love for David Gemmell novels, im a sucker for last stands. and the loyalists have a lot more of them in the HH novels than the traitors.
