Lootaz 9,10,15 are the only way I take them. 10 fits low point games and 2 squads of 15 at 2k points is just monstrous. I've had opponents pour fire into lootas take 4 wagons AND deff koptas after them. It's all about the fear factor they bring. I auto include them with whatever point range I'm playing. I've noticed that every army just does well with heavy support fire (crazy right?) 2 vindicators and 2 autocannon dreads from the vanilla marines won a 1k point tourney last saturday I was in...so lootas are almost a necessity

Hull points level their unpredictable nature.
They need cover and hopefully a bosspole.

I don't think it's worth taking a bosspole on them. Personally it's just a "suicide" unit you hope that lives. I've popped 2 bw's in the same turn with them, then turned around and had them be overrun by ONE deff kopta. It's just easier to make them more damagey than more survivable and people will devote a LARGE portion of their army to bringing them down. I've seen an opponent deploy and realize they have to take down the lootas or they're going to eat them and basically switch table edges. If you put down the skyport thing or whatever you get a 4+ invuln so that might be worth a look.
