Hey, i started daemons (and fantasy in general) because i already play two "good" armies in 40k and i wanted to take a walk on the dark side. anyways, i've been getting stomped over and over in 1000 point games. So, i've come to ask for help.
Here is what i've come up with. i haven't tried this list (or even bought the soul grinder and skulltaker models), but it seems solid even though i'm really a noob.
Heroes:
Skulltaker 150
Herald of Khorne BSB 150
Herald of Slaanesh wTorment blade95
Core:
30 Bloodletters 6x5 block w/musician, standard bearer, icon of endless war 403
22 Daemonettes 5x4+2 block w/ musician, standard bearer, siren standard 312
Special:
3 Flamers of Tzeentch 120
Rare:
Sould Grinder w/Phlegm 300
HoS goes in with the 'nettes, HoK with the 'letters. plan on using the slaaneshi daemons for artillery and ranged killing and the letters for dispatching tougher stuff. what do you guys think?

Give your HoK obsidian armour.
I would say horde your 'letters.
You need more daemonettes and bloodletters. T3 with a 5++ isn't that great. You want units of 40 ideally.
I haven't seen the rules they wrote for the grinder yet so I cannot comment.

I generally run blocks of 30 with the daemons, and I've done pretty well in large events.
at 1500 points are tight. around 2k they tend to loosen up and allow a greater daemon.
Get at least the armour of khorne on your herald. Obsidian is good for a bsb.
Herald of slaneesh is great at 95 points. If you had more points or even a tzeench herald for aguments and hexes I'd reccomend a siren song.
Flamers got nerfed hard with the update, and you'll have to roll 6's hit most of the time. I think for the points screamers are better chaff or two solo fiends(my usuals)

yeah, i noticed that flamers got beat up pretty badly. :(.
i've noticed that fiends tend to die in about one volley most of the time. is that what they're there for? to be cannon fodder?

Fiends are great against most units, but against a lot of archers, they aren't great. Depends on your meta. Against warmachines, they are gold. They can be in the backfield very quick, and if they waste cannon shots on them, that's fine.
Cut flamers for sure. I would also cut Skulltaker. At that low point cost, you aren't running up against uber-chars or monsters that he really excels against. You are more likely just to run up against good rank and file that he isn't really any better than a herald.
I've been looking at the Soul Grinder and I honestly don't think it is worth it. That's a TON of points for a warmachine and he isn't amazing in hand to hand. I'd rather the exalted chariot. It puts out 2d6+1 impact hits plus another 16 regular (albeit str 3) attacks.
Again, for siren standard, only great against heavy archer units. I find it doesn't make it super worwhile.
Why is your BSB 150? Shouldn't it be 125? But yeah, you definitely want some armor of khorne, one of the best upgrades you can have.
Also take a look at screamers, they are pretty nice now.

you're right about the BSB. he's only 125.
if i drop the flamers and the soul grinder that is all of my ranged attacks so then i'd be in the same spot i was.
i play dwarves a lot so i don't get magic off often if ever, so that's what i thought the flamers and sould grinder would help with.

I think that even therough flamers got nerfd they still are one of the only two shooting units in the daemon army and in a bonus they are now special not rare so you can have more bloodcrushers and the brand new soul grinder

The problem is that the cost more, they lost a strength so they don't randomly win some close combats and they essentially lost 1 off their BS.
Don't think so narrowly. Ranged doesn't need to be fought with our ranged shooting. Our ranged sucks.
You need some combination of fast moving units (fiends, disc-riders) and magic. Tz magic has some very good bolts. What about a block of horrors with a herald? Very survivable against shooting with 4++ and can shoot a lot of mm's back.

horrors seems to be a decent option now. i play against dwarves a lot though and they basically block all magic.

You can try to overwhelm his dice though. Horrors are great at casting lots of small spells. Plus Blue Scribes, who can cast one for free.. and some are bound to get through...

Here's the thing about the Soul Grinder. 4 ws3 attacks in close combat. Low ld. So you are either paying 300 points to sit back with a normal rock thrower (which, look at other armies, is a very very bad deal), or you get stuck in... with what? Well, other big monsters it can do ok against. But against most rnf, you need a good thunderstomp every round or you risk blowing up to static.
Maybe in larger games, but at under 2k, it just isn't worth it.
As for the point about spells - I agree, you won't be able to get any particular hit off. But that wouldn't be the point... you just want to have some ranged firepower. Compare - 300 points almost gets you blue scribes, 10 horrors and a tz herald. That's 4 spells a turn that will probably do as much damage as a stone thrower even if 2-3 are getting blocked every turn... plus the potential for a lot more if you put even a few more points into them.

hmmm that's a really good point. i haven't looked at other codex's costs on stone throwers at all. daemons kind of got screwed in the range category and i guess i'll just have to deal with it.
