I'm primarily a Necron player, and don't get me wrong, I love my Necrons. The problem is that with the new codex and rulebook, I now feel like TFG every time I take out my Necrons. More than one of my gaming group has expressed the view that they're tired of facing 'Crons. So now I'm looking at starting a secondary army. I was originally going to go with Grey Knights, as they seem easy to start (low model count), but evidently Grey Knights are just as hated as Necrons.

So what I'm looking for is an army that can have lots and lots of options. I want to be able to go all-assault, all-ranged, deep strikers, heavyspam, flierspam, you name it. Just from what I know of other armies (which isn't much, to be frank), Tyranids and generic Space Marines seem like my best options here. Naturally, I have problems with both armies - I see a lot of Space Marines in my local group, and I really don't like the look of the Tyranid's 'Instinctive Behavior" special rule. Any advice on these two? Are there maybe other armies I've missed that can field lots of options?

A few stipulations:

- Cash is an issue for me, so I'd prefer armies with low model count.

- I won't play Eldar, Dark Eldar, or Space Wolves.

- While I would love to play Daemons or CSM (as I like their fluff and I think they're cool), I'm leery of buying another army that's soon to get a new codex. The last thing I need is more TFG catcalls.

Any advice, Dakka?

Hey Mate,

I have to say i'm kinda of in the same boat. Love my 'Crons but my gaming circle are tired of.....well.... losing. I started a similar post, stated the sort of army is was after and got some really good responses and advice. I eventually decided to hold off until the new codex(s?) are released. Although there is a part of me that is craving the WAAAAAGH! So i may end up playing Orks.

Judging by the stipulations you've posted though, my advice would be BA, can be made low model count by going sanguinary heavy of Death Company heavy, kind of the elite army choices they have.

I'll be interested to see the advice your given and will follow this post!

Best of luck

Play an IG Veterans list. Valkyries are cheap compared to stormravens (In points and cash), you have a ton of options with playstyles, and they're pretty fun/easy to paint.

By the time you have your new army painted up and ready to go, necron won't be flavor of the month any more. Honestly, I'd just wait it out.

If you want to do a second army anyways, your specs have made it a tall order. A low-model-count army that can spam assault units, shooty units, vehicles and fliers, in the same codex?

I think GK may be your only real option here, but then you're starting the OTHER flavor of the month army...

I might actually wait and see what CSM does when they get their new codex. CSM is traditionally a low-model-count army, and undoubtedly they will get at least one flier with their new codex.

In regards to Tyranid instinctive behavior, it's not really an issue. Having enough synapse to negate it is easy due to a lot of good units having it (tyrants, Zoanthropes, tervigons), and are also units that will likely be spread through your line. It's really a non-issue unless your opponent specifically targets them, and even then, it takes a long time to do since they're pretty resilient, so it's usually not an attractive option.

Ailaros - I think you may have misunderstood my request. What I'm looking for is an army that can field (mostly) assault, (mostly) shooty, (mostly) heavy, etc - in short, an army that I can run any way I please. Also, regarding "Flavor of the Month" syndrome - that's really only part of the problem. The other part of the problem is that whenever I want a game....I'm bringing Necrons. It's my only army, I don't have a choice. The other guys get tired of seeing my robo-zombies. I'm pretty sure that I occasionally get tailored against, too - maybe not intentionally, but since they KNOW what i'm bringing....Most of my gaming group can field three or more different armies, so I'm forced to guess what they're bringing to the table.

All that being said, I do like chaos, I just don't want to be playing another 'overpowered' codex. It might be better to wait.

Loki - that's good to know. I was really leery of even looking at Tyranids once I saw the Instinctive Behavior rule - the idea of losing control of where my models are going doesn't appeal to me at all. I'll probably end up putting together some sample lists, and talking shop with my local 'Nid player. Mostly was trying to feel out the community on the issue.

Right, I was assuming that that's what you meant. There aren't many low-model count armies to begin with, and some of them have flaws, like codex marine's poor abilities in assault, SW's lack of fliers, etc. I think GK is probably the best, followed by BA, followed by CSM, though that will probably change with the new codex.

No matter which of these you pick (depending on how CSM looks), you're going to be labeled a cheesemaster. The only way to fix this is with an army with some real weaknesses or by playing a horde.

Well, I'd consider Dark Angels. They seem to get a codex soon, and SM chapters are usually not that overpowered.
