Okay,

So I am building a new Draigo Wing (I have had one even since 5th ed. as well as a Crowe List) and have decided to incorporate the Dread Knight, which seems to have received some much needed improvements in 6th ed.

However, the way i see it - Damn. To get one that is effective (in my opinion), he is going to cost nearly as much as a paladin squad. For exmaple:

A dreadknight, with teleporter, and gun (incinerator or Psycannon) iis about 230+pts.; add the great sword and you are looking at a Land Raider.

I have used it in a battle before and it seems "okay". I like Shunting to their lines, incinerate a bunch of guys then next turn will likely get into combat. it does die every game, but is interesting.

So, My question, does anybody have a better way to use the Dreadknight? (JY2 any ideas?)

Just an idea of the list it is with:

Draigo

10 Paladins with hammers, 4 psycannons, banner, and apothecary
5 Paladins 2 psycannons hammer
1 Solodin Hammer
1 Solodin Hammer
1 Solodin Hammer

1 Psyfleman Dread
1 Psyfleman Dread
Dreadknight

2000pts

That's how I usually run my Draigowing list as well, either with the dreadknight or a stormraven. However, I try to fit in a warding stave into my squads as well. And you can pay for that by dropping a soladin or perhaps even the Apothecary (honestly, I feel that they are hard enough to kill even without the apothecary). But really, it's a matter of preference.

You just have to watch out when you play against a shooty army with lascannons and equivalents. Now with cover being only 5+, your dreadknight will drop quickly against an opponent running razor-spam or similar builds. Also, you will have trouble dealing with flyer armies. On the other hand, because of the heavy incinerator, you are probably slightly better equipped to deal with hordes. Just try not to get your expensive dreadknight tied up in combat against one unless he is within contesting range of an enemy objective.

I run a DK with sword, incinerator and teleporter at 260pts. I usually shunt it straight away but its more of a distraction than anything else. It almost always dies, but it usually takes a while allowing the rest of my army to move up unscathed, it doesn't often make its points back in kills but I think it does in reducing casualties around the rest of the board.

I've heard if you want them to live the best way is to take 2 of them. 1 DK will have a lot of fire focussing on him, which is why he'll rarely make it, but 2 will either split the fire, or one will not be targetted while the other is concentrated on. It can give you're opponent quite a headache trying to prioritize targets. Is a bit of a points sink though.

3000pts 30 wins 2 draws 12 loses

5000pts 13 wins 1 draws 9 losses

WoC "where the points don't matter" 6 wins 0 draws 4 losses

Things my Giant has pocketed for later in AoS: 1 zombie, 2 spirit hosts, 1 banshee, 1 zombie dragon, assorted phoenix guard
