I've got an in for a set of cheap ogres, but I've only been a 40k player, so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me on the inns and outs of fantasy.

Love the ogre style, most models -like 80%- rock.

I can get my hands on 10 ogre bulls, 4 mournfang cav (only one assembled), 12 ironguts an awesomely painted stonehorn, two firebellies and a tyrant, along with a bunch of bits that might have some whole models stuffed in the corners somewhere, if I'm willing to dig (I am so totally going to pick up the bits bag, even if nothing else, they're awesome).

I don't want to dive into fantasy on the deep end, but 1000 fantasy points seems to be about 500-750 points in the 40k world (I like playing with painted armies, so my orks got purchased piecemeal working up from 500).

Combine that with my friend being totally open to me cherry picking I thought this is just like a godsend for a starter 1k of ogres (we're old hands, and he has a vested interest, if I pick this army up he has someone to play fantasy with).

My list was looking something like:

1 firebelly
6 or 8 bulls
4 mournfang (not sure on rules, but they look awesome, so they're for sure in)
4 or so ironguts
and the stonehorn

From what I gathered this would be a little over a 1k pt list, or easily over, but that as a core it would give me some fun choices.

So, to the curious:
What 1k list would my fellow dakkites craft if presented this situation, or even what would you do irregardless of a 1k list, ect.

Thanks for your time; I don't own the 8th, but my friend let me page through, and he gave he his outdated ogre codex which I've been paging through but realize is seriously outdated (but fluffy-awesome). Any feedback you can give me would be much appreciated.

I am also not terribly concerned with competitiveness. I'd really like to get into the magic system though, since orks got shafted by the psyker rules in 6th and I've been chafing ever since.

Quick edit: I downloaded battle scribe for the new point values:

962:
firebelly

4 irongut
6 ogre

4 cav

stonehorn

Is 38 points enough to pimp out the list with gear? Or is gear more important in fantasy?

No really sure on the values but I like:
Firebelly on a Carpet -Fly it into a flank and breathe that fire
4 Mourfang with Dragonhide or whatever it's called
Ironblaster
Bulls with Ironfist to fill in the rest maybe a small unit of lead belchers

As for the Stonehorn I'm not sure on the points but for a rare you have to keep it under 250 and an Ironblaster is essential

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Thanks for the swift response!

I really like the way ironguts appear, but from experience in 40k it's never a good plan to take all elite infantry (so i tossed in some ogre bulls). I notice you didn't include any, should I just go with bulls? and what are good sizes, I only got halfway into formations.

the stonehorn takes up 250 points flat, with no options available 'cept free ones, in the 'rare' slot. lucky that, heh.

Is the carpet magic gear? Because that sounds awesome, plenty of room for conversion fun.

My friend doesn't have an ironblaster, it doesn't look too bad on the gw website though, but in the end I think I'll stick to what I can get secondhand for now.

The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.

A) Guts are core. And combined with the 8 mournfangs the gutstar is a lethal unit.

B) Mournfang cav are some of the most Bent things in the ogre army. But then again, ogres do play with the tactical finesse of a sledgehammer to the face.

C) Carpet is magic gear. I'm not sure on the points though.

D) Ironblasters are awesome. Chariots that are cannons. Definitely worth taking. 1 works well, but 2 works even better.

somewhere in the webway

i woud suggest converting the ironguts into bulls. the reaosn being:

your save is the same pretty much. heavy armor for a 5+ and IF/LA for 5+. your str 6 on the IG will mulch infantry and maybe some bigger stuff, but they in turn will get WRECKED by that bigger stuff (as your going last)

however, having a big unit of bulls, with a 5+/6+ parry is imho a bit better, plus you can get more and go for that horde. with the firebelly attached you now have a SCARY unit that can chomp most things with pretty much no problem. 1000 pt list with what you have:

firebelly, GW, = 129

10 ogres, ironffists, full command = 414

4 mournfangs, HA/IF, standard, dragonhide banner = 340

ironblaster - 170

= 989

11 pts to spend on...something. not sure what tbh.

in any case, you have a nice brick of ogres in core, with the firebelly attached you can do pretty well in CC, and still provide some range damage. the MFC will destroy anything they look at, and on the turn they charge they reroll all 1's for hits, wounds, and saves. plus if you need it, a str 3 BW with ASL on the victim. the iron balster can deal with any big scary, plus help in combat if needed. (and its grapeshot is WIN)

I would get a musician on the mournfangs for swift reforms and whatnot
