So it's here again with some changes form last time (not least of all the fact that we get to use 6th ed rules. So onto the basic rules and changes:


THE RULES
1999pts (thus disallowing a secondary FoC). No Mysterious Terrain and no allies. It's 6th ed's first competitive outing so we want to keep a lot of the "untested" stuff out of the water for now. It does look like Mysterious Objectives are in though as I can't find anything in the Chinese rules-set that states otherwise. Objectives do not count as terrain and may not be placed higher than the 2nd floor. In the case of a draw go to traditional VP's with the exception that fleeing units do not count. Random Warlord Traits are in.

Any issues that you know of bring them to the attention of Yang before-hand if possible. If anything comes up in game try to resolve it in a friendly manner with your opponent. If you are unable to then a TO will resolve the issue. TO's decision is final. No knock-off models allowed (instant DQ). Any conversions or scratch-builds must pass TO approval before use. Anyone interfering in someone elses game will be given a verbal warning. If the interference persists they will be DQ'ed and removed from the store.

As before this is a K.O style tournament with 4 groups of 8. The final 4 from last year go through the first round automatically (so well done Mray01 and DiuDiu from Dakka). Prizes are:

- 1st place 1000 RMB voucher
- 2nd Place 500RMB voucher
- 3rd Place 200 RMB voucher
- There will be a rookie award for the best placing participant who has played for less than a year.

Date is undecided yet though they are looking at late August (possibly the 24th). Entry fee is 60 yuan paid directly to Yang. Alternatively make a purchase of over 60 yuan in store and get your ticket free.

AMENDMENTS (will try to keep this updated)

1. Fortifications are allowed though the Fortress of Redemption is disallowed
2. Possible online video posting of the finals?

Last year was a blast with the only girl on the Shanghai scene taking first place. Mray took 2nd. If you are in the area and wish to participate or just hang out with a bunch of wargamers then send me a PM if you don't already know the address. While the tournament may be competitive the scene isn't. Beer and other alcoholic beverages go down well here (though don't be surprised if you don't win as much when drunk, lol). There's also the chance to hang out after your games and get pizza or something.

Well I'm hoping Necrons take it as well. Not sure how I'll do this year though as I am a bit out of practise. Just had our first baby (boy) so been spending a lot more time at home. Still trying to keep up to date on 40k via Dakka though.

Actually this year is likely to be quite tough. I imagine now that 6th has come out we are likely to see some crazy combos that no-one has thought of yet, and other armies that are just plain awful. My prediction is the first few rounds should be easy (depending on match-up) and the semi's onwards will be ridiculously tough as the real competitive lists duke it out. Diudiu and Mray actually had a practise game that I heard about a few days ago. In that match she retained her title, lol, though Mray may be bringing a brutal Deathstar (Draigo and Pals) which has the potential to do really well. Will have to see how it goes.

And with that I'm off to hurriedly assemble the remains of my army (no proxies for me this year...hooray!!!).

Necrons are unbelievably strong this edition. The BA list DD brought last year doesn't stand a chance unless she changes it up. And Mray's Draigowing only has a chance if you guys are playing The Relic and he gets on the objective first. Otherwise, he's in for a tough fight against your necrons.

It is not really a GT Luke - but fun...

Luke, keep in mind Diu Diu's boyfriend will be bringing Necrons too. Saw him playing the other night. not sure what he has, but i saw at least two of the doom scythes.

Hopefull my GKs will do okay. This is the first time i have played a non-purifier list in a tournament.

Yang has advertised it as a Grand Tournament in his Chinese rules and information pack and it's his Tourney so I'm loathe to change the name in any way. It is also the only decent tournament we now get in Shanghai so I'll take what I can get, lol.

Not too worried about Ian. He may do well based on the strength of his list, but he is new to Necrons and has little actual experience. Still could be tough if he's packing fliers. TBH I'm more worried about Sun this year. Now Craig looks to be off the scene he is really taking an interest in getting back to the top spot.

And the showdown has begun. Groups were determined yesterday and I have been pitted against Sun with his DE. Fortunately he has brought what I consider to be a 5th ed list (Gunboat spam) so he may have issues with my fliers. I was initially worried as he was going be to using his IG, but thankfully for me he changed his army). However if I win this matchup my next round is vs current reigning champion DiuDiu. I'm not 100% sure on her list but it seems she is at least packing 2 Stormravens and a Landraider. Her philosophy seems to be bring as few Troops as possible so she can maximize carnage...Am hoping for an Objective game.

Will get full details of other groups later today as well as getting my first round game in. Will update again then.

And I'm home after a gruelling 4 hours of gaming. The game went mostly as predicted with his list REALLY struggling against fliers. Unfortunately forgot to take any pics after Turn 1 so not much point posting just those 3 (we both got really into the game).

Though he started off strong (Purge the Alien with him grabbing first turn and Night Fight as his Warlord trait) he seemed unable to take a lead. I castled up and over 2 turns of his shooting he failed to get First Blood. When my Turn 2 came 4 fliers came in and immediately took a 5 VP lead. Over the next 2 turns he still couldn't inflict enough damage and we called it at the start of my Turn 4. 9VP's to 3VP's.

It'll take time for people to adjust to 6E, especially against flyers and some of the newer "power" combos (i.e. allies) out there.

Except, of course, if you're playing a flyer army or one of the "power" combos.

BTW, 3x doom scythes > 3x storm ravens IMO.

Luke (Necrons) tabled Sun (Dark Eldar). Unfortunately the mission was VPs, and with so many raiders and light infantry, Luke had a field day. I saw the beginning of the end. Part of it was the Sun wasn't agressive enough in the first two turns before Luke's flyers came on-board.

So, congrats luke, for your first 6th ed win.

In other news, there was another Coteaz Draigo List that that was:

2 Jakearo and warrior acoloytes (maybe servitors too)
3 sotrm ravens with bolters and psybolt ammo

The list played a chaos army with no flyers and lost... 2 : 1 VP. Neither could control an objective, with all being contested or not held, and the Draigo list only had first blood; the chaos list had line breaker and slay the warlord. I didn't see the game but...

All in all, i am happy the two lists were knocked out. the Dark Eldar was the worst matchup for me, even compared to Luke's necrons.

Luke will play a Blook Angels list with:

Land Raider
5 thunder hammer terminators
5 assault marines
10 scouts
maybe some other things

Overall, i feel the local metta here (i.e., the local Chinese players) is very immature, in that they take the most expensive and hard hitting things in their army and don't take enough troops. Just a trend i see... then again, my next opponent will be a space wolf drop pod army...something like 9 drop pods...i will try and do a battle rep.

TBH I'm not sure how well my 5 fliers will match-up to her 3. While I have the numbers she has PotMS and higher AV. Of course Gauss can also do the business on her vehicles regardless of AV...Her Landraider might just as well be a Rhino with an extra Hull point, lol.

While I like to think the match-up is in my favour I can't under-estimate DiuDiu. She is after all the reigning champion and a very precise and thorough player. I don't think we will see many mistakes on her part. Of course if we draw an objective mission then I have an instant advantage since I have 6 Troops to her 2, so perhaps playing the mission and not getting caught up in the shooting phase (like last year) will get me better results.

Mark's match-ups till the semi's look pretty easy to be honest. Zarks Drop-podding SW would have been an issue for most of the lists out there...except for Marks Paladins. Coteaz's "I've been expecting you" will ensure the Paladins punish anyone foolish enough to DS in rapid fire range, or even a bad scatter for that matter.

Unsure on other lists currently but am expecting Yang to pass them on when he gets the time. Will update when I get them.

Very interesting. I suspect it will come down to the air war; whose HS flyers beat whose. Going second is likely to be key.

That Blood Angels list is really interesting...

At first i couldn't believe how much she fit in (2 terminator squads, land raider, 3 storm ravens).

Challenge for her list will be the objective games, but if she can play properly (and she does) she may be able to mitigate that with careful planing.

I will come down and watch the match.

Makes me feel like my list has nothing at all :(

First, congratulation for Luke's first winning.

I would play with a Space Marine first, that's a powerful shooting list on ground, and 10 AT is hard for me.

Hope I could meet Luke. It's interesting that you have two destroy lords.

Yeah, spoke to Yang already. We came up with a solution fliers can be hit if Skyfire mode is chosen, but non-fliers are not. Same the other way around too.

I brought it up to Yang in advance since I knew it could be a point of contention and we have signed off on it this way. It may not be right, but due to poor wording we just chose the most elegant solution that seemed to be the closest fit.

Not that it will matter to your list...Tesla does the job without the need for Death Rays, lol.

That was how we played it at the Golden Throne and that is how I play it currently. It is a fair compromise. Either everythng fires at flyers and don't hit the ground troops or vice versa.


Also, one thing to keep in mind is that if you evade with the doom scythe, then you cannot fire its deathray. Because only guns that are fired using BS can be fired in Snapshot mode. At least that is how most people interpret it.

And, if the doom scythe come into the battle first, then shooted, maybe evading is not bad - you could go back into reserve the next turn.

BTW - how does the POMS work. If for example a storm raven is firing at another flyer, but with one of its weapons shoots at a ground target?

Then one of them is going to be resolved as a snap shot. You declare Skyfire, or not as the case may be when you begin shooting. Just because you can shot at a different target it doesn't over-rule the basic rules for shooting. So to clarify:

Declare Skyfire - shoot 2 guns at a flier - they hit on regular BS
The remaining gun shooting ground targets is resolved as a Snap Shot since you are employing Skyfire.

Don't declare Skyfire - shoot 2 guns at ground targets - resolved at regular BS.
The remaining gun shooting at a flier is resolved as a Snap Shot since you didn't declare Skyfire.

I guess evading isn't always a bad option, but against your list DiuDiu I think I want my fliers on the table as long as possible. Your Stormravens could be a big problem.
