Just a question and im looking for some opinions, when taking a halberd is a shield worth it? the model with the halberd is obviously going to be trying to get into CC and when it does the shield becomes useless. so are they even worth taking?

Which army? I can only speak for WoC and the answer is simple...

...always.

w/ shields, you get a 3+ vs shooting for a single point / model.

Empire halberdiers can take shields, but it's wasted points.

So the answer is on Chaos Warriors the models are expensive and therefore the +1AS against shooting is worth it, for a State Trooper the Empire feels it's money is better spent giving another peasant a halbred and pajamas to wear.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Yes, on expensive models it can be worth it, but on really cheap models its not.

Generally because cheap models have almost no save anyway so the extra one from the Halberd isn't all that useful.

The way I look at it is this:

If a model has a 6+ save, it will be useless 90% of the time. S4 is all too common. Making that a 5+ generally means a 6+ after modifiers, which is often a waste of points. 40 points is more useful in a list than having halberdiers who MIGHT survive 16% better, sometimes it won't help at all.

If a model has a 5+ save, it stands a little chance of surviving. If we can add +1 to it then there is a decent chance of survival, even at S4. So models with Heavy Armor should take shields where possible, even if it's only to soften shooting.

If a model has a 4+, a shield is almost compulsory. Most models with 4+ base saves are pricey, and 1 or 2 points more to protect that investment better is worth it, even if only against shooting.

For characters shields are must haves unless you plan on using GW or magic armor that can't be improved. If your character will be out on his own, the shield is mandatory just to help against shooting. Well worth the points.

I generally put shields on black orcs (whenever I get around to using them, that is) even though once they get into combat it's always double choppa or GW. One extra pip of armour against shooting is usually worth it on 10+ point models.

And Black Orcs can choose to use their shields in preference to their special weapons because of their Armed to da Teef special rule so you can actually benifit from the shield.

As was said above, I never do on my halberdiers...They die easily anyway, why pay for shields when you can have more halberds?

On knights, Heroes, and expensive unit you need shields, and if shields come as standard, take the halberds if you can.

My temple guard always have both, at first i was annoyed since i felt i'd like them cheaper without, but since then the shields have saved me from so many shots/spells that i'm extremely happy to have them.
