So taking full advantage of the 6th ed rules, I just modeled up a small guard detachment to go along with my Blood Angels.

Now this is one of those things where, fluffwise, marines aren't 100% self sufficient, like, their 3000 crew or whatever battle barges don't fly themselves, and it's not all mindless servitors.
The Gothic rules for space marines even imply that their serfs do some fighting and one would think that even the less industrialized recruitment worlds would maintain a small defense garrison.

So basically, I want to make these guard models looks like they work for the chapter, but I feel like I shouldn't just give them the full Blood Angel insignia , since they're not Blood Angels.

Has anyone else done something like this? Modeled guard to go along with your marines? How did you go about doing it?

You mean like this? :-

You could just use the colour scheme without any insignia.

I don't think it would be out of place to allow them to wear the chapter insignia; they're part of the chapter, after all (if we're talking serfs, at least).

Thanks for the link dude, that guy's army looks great. So I guess full Blood Angel insignias it is.

If they're Serfs, I'd say go with the insignia, but if they're the Baal PDF i don't think using the insignia would fit even if it is the homeworld of the Blood Angels. For PDF you'd probably have a lot of refences to Baal itself since that's the planet they defend but less to the space marine allies, at least how i see it.

I think you could do either, maybe a similar but different insignia?

Blood drop theme would totally fit still.

Now, if you have guys with no helmets on you should make sure to model them all gnarly and mutated, Baal is full of freaky rad-waste mutants.

In the ultra marines word bearer's and iron warriors novels the ultramarines have their own sort of PDF forces kind of like the one linked above and I'm sure the blood angels could have something close to that on one of their moons especially Baal secundus where sanguinius was born

IIRC Baal is a Mad Max/Fallout style post-nuke deathworld with the surviving inhabitants roaming the planet in ramshackle vehicles and radsuits made from whatever is available. So while I don't see them having a formal PDF like Parson's Macragge PDF (though you could certainly model them as such if you wish, though expect flak from fanboys), I do think that you could do some really cool conversions based around Ork vehicle components and other materials like Pig Iron Kolony bitz that would fit the part well.If you want to stick to official bitz, Forge World's chaos renegade militia conversion kits look spot-on and would only need the chaos icons removed/filled in.

More on original topic, the scavenger "tribe" that raised Sanguinious were called "The Folk of the Pure Blood" or simply "The Blood" so it's a good bet Sangy borrowed the blood drop design from them.

The Blood? I think red bandanas and sidewise-held autopistols/stub guns becomes obvious for a Penal Legion.

The droplet of Blood is enough. I would stay away from wings though. Just to show that they aren't Marines.

Maybe I have been watching too much True Blood, but what about calling them the 13th Baal Fangbangers?
