Hi, does anyone have any experience with DP Assault Squads? By my understanding If you do not fit your Assault Squad with JPs you may assign them a free DT in the form of either a Rhino or a Drop Pod.

I've read a lot of the HH books and in which they often depict the action of Drop Pod assaults delivering the characters straight into the battle zone. While they do not always go to plan, they are pretty darn exciting.

So really I was wondering if they are actually any good on the table or is the glory of DPs reserved only for the fluff.

Cheers

I love DPs. Dropping a dread in the enemy backfield can be quite entertaining. Also with the 6' disembark of 6th I'm considering using them for my Grey Hunter allies.

I'm leaning more towards drop pod death company now, more than assault marines. Figure whatever you drop is going to die... a squad of 10 death company in a pod is 235 points bare, a mere 45 points more than a normal assault squad.

For those 45 points though, you basically get the equivalent effect of a sanguinary priest on the entire squad, the ability to take way more close combat weapons, an extra attack on the charge, an extra attack base, fearless, AND weapon skill 5....

Plus, you can take the grunts with bolters instead of bp/cs, so you actually have the range to do some damage. Plus the ability to actually drop things while doing an overwatch.

They are pretty sweet. It is hard to be a nice balanced drop pod list.
I would leave the assault squad drop pods as the last dropping pods to grab objectives.

Honour guard are something to consider.

other fun with drop pods is that a unit doesn't have to declare combat squads untill they hit the table if they are in a drop pod. Well this is the case with C:sm for sure. so the fun is hitting the table and then splitting 2x5 man assault squads to atleast make a dent in something. Well that's atleast if you survive the first volley of fire that comes at all units arriving from a drop pod

Page 1. Basically you must decide before deployment if the unit is going to Combat Squad. They can still go in the Droppod together, but now the decision to split them must be made before they arrive.

Make sense?

Yep, I agree. I'm leaning much more towards DC than RAS these days and DPs seem to be a good delivery mechanism. The biggest downside is the no assault on turn one of course.

The link to the FAQ above. It is pretty clear compared to 5th edition debates about when does a unit 'deploy', though that was clear enough.
