Hi.

I like the GW paint range, but in case I come across colours that GW don't do I was thinking of using Tamiya paint, as Tamiya stuff is pretty good quality and is one of the paint ranges available in my area. I have some of their paint thinner for my airbrush and it works well, and the Clear colours look very good, but what are their paints like?

Couldnt tell ya, i only use their paints for airbrush work (i find them superior in this role to other paints out there), ive found their paints to be too thin/fast drying for brush work otherwise.

Tamiya paints are superb for airbrushing. For brushwork, not so easy.

Some people have complained that patches were coming off when applying several layers by brush. Like winterdyne said, they're best for airbrushing. Also, if you don't know, ventilate the hell out of the room you're working in, if only because they stink real bad.

I had some minor chipping when applied with a brush, when airbrushing it was great.

I've been painting with Tamiya acrylics now for almost 30 years. The paint is good quality, but it does tend to gum up on your brush a little easy, so make sure you clean your brush often. I will also say that there is not a better clear acrylic out there. If you aren't so keen on painting the jewel effects, just paint a good glob of chainmail underneath whatever you wanted to use, and then use the clear colors that they have.

I hope that helps!

+1 for their Clear Colors - fabulous for lenses and tinted metallics.

Be very careful with thinning - even though they're acrylic, you can't thin them with water.

+2 to that, they dry quickly and easily as they are an alcohol base (hence the smell). You must use x20A thinner for best results, and never water, they require a reducer and the best one is their own brand (although some people sub different alcohol or thinners, but that is preference of the person).

I love Tamyia paint and use it often to airbrush....This model here had all the base colors painted with Tamyia colors;

I prefer to use Isopropynol to thin my paint when airbrushing, Give some a try and I think you will like it!!

Here is my take on Tamiya;
1) As long as you thin them(I use water) they paint well. Will take at least 2 coats to get a good base.
2) Stay away from the gloss. Its evil.
3) Clear red,blue,green,orange,red and green are excellent for doing lights, visors etc. Paint 'lights/visors' silver then coat with a clear colour.
4) Metallics(especially gold leaf) are awful. Avoid.
5) Their matt colurs are excellent especially Nato black, flat black, field grey,sea blue. All are great for things like tyres, rubber in general or anything you don't want too dark.
6) Great for basic military gear.
Recommend them.

Thanks guys.

From the info, I will go to get some of their Clear colours, mainly red and green. I do have an airbrush, so I will consider getting some for airbrushing...
