What do you guys think of the new allies rules? Are they a massive boost to your army? Do fortifications help your army?

What do you think of Necrons with Paladin Allies? Black Templars and Dark Angels? Tau and Ultramarines? Guardsmen manning Fortresses of Redemption?

I love the allies and fortifications. Gives you motivation to buy new stuff.

My new 1500 point list starts with a small contingent of guard on the ground behind an Aegis wall... you can just imagine that they are sitting there, outnumbered, and facing a huge enemy they can't hope to win against... calling repeated for help over their comm-link.

Then... a pair of blood angels stormravens flies overhead! The angels of death have arrived! The guardsmen are saved! With the aid of their space marine battle brothers, they will be able to win the day!

Cinematic gameplay at its finest, my friend.

Of course, there are dumb things that are possible that kinda break this, like ghazgul + yarrick on the same side is possible, but I suppose you could write that off as they aren't really allies, but 2 seperate armies attacking a third army at the same time, so they can continue to kill each other in peace after the other guys are dead.

I have not tried out the fortifications very much but I have been enjoying running a squad of Deathwing with my Necrons.

I agree with Horst. Something about a squad of space marines holding the line against innumerable Tyranid Hordes is very cool. also how you can equip it with a quad-gun. I think it is one of the most(if not the) best guns in the game.

i like having allies simply for the fact that you don't need an entire army now, and idk about you guys but throughout my time playing ive come across a basalisk here and squad of marines there not really knowing what to do with them but now with the rules for allies they now see some action and it help with my budget not having to fork over tons of money to have a decent sized army

Well, allies can be quite useful if they synergize with your main force. However, I'd start taking allies only in larger pt games, like 1750 pts and higher.

I like the rules for allies it allows you to satrt out with a small force and figure out if you like the play style of said force before you go out and acquire a 2000 pt army it just makes sense.

Fortifications just make sense and gives players some control over terrain in the game.

I really don't care for allies, I never have been WAAC, and currently I play IG and IG alone (lots of different regiment uniforms and paint schemes however), but I have begun thinking of ways I could start new armies that could use my Guard forces, in particular, Tau and Gue'vesa, Space Marines and Chapter Serfs trained and equipped for war, and an independent human empire that uses advanced tech and daemons by using Coteaz/Henchman spam and Necrons (human soldiers supported by daemonhosts and combat androids). Still not ready to start any of those armies yet because I am still working on a horde regiment and haven't decided which I will choose.

As for fortifications I do have some foot slogging vets spamming grenade launchers and missile launchers in carapace armour, I assume they could benefit from some fortifications.

Fortifications? I don't know.

For the next tournament (1999+1 pts), I'll go for an army with allies:

Eldar (main) + Space Marines

or

Grey Knights (main) + Necrons

I started a Coteaz/Henchmen army at the end of 5th before Allies was even on the table. It can be done fairly cheap as the IG model generally crosses over to the Acolyte role.

I don't go for some of the allies partnerships other than the obvious ones such as SM and IG or IG and SOB or DE and CSM but the fortifications are a good idea.

I just make my own fortifications like my scratch built sky shield landing pad in the showcase forum.

Fortifications are nice, since it gives fairly easy access to AA in the form of an aegis line, as well as the chance to steal an enemy's guns and use it on them. Allies however...in principle I like it. But around here we play 2v2's reasonably often and even a 2v2v2 coming up this Friday and while thats great for my Salamanders it leaves my Tyranids out in the cold, not to mention also scewing over whoever I was supposed to be allied with since they're on thier own now too. We can house rule around it of course, but its a bit of a kick in the teeth.

Salamanders: ~2,000 pts
Tyranids: ~1,000 pts
Tau: ~1,500 pts

They are a good addition to the game. They let some of the poorer codices fill in the gaps while also not being an Auto-include in every army. I think they really won't be common in the competitive scene, at least with the codices that were competitive before.

I loved having allies in my witch hunter codex. The new rules have some nice advantages over those old ones but a few bummers as well. As for fortifications honestly while at first I loved them, they have now gotten to the point where everyone I see is using an ADL+quad gun. I am really hoping there will be new terrain released in the codices and such so that ADLs aren't so common.

They are just too good though as is right now you have to be nuts to not want one. Allies I still think are great though.

When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.

The middle of the table is not in your deployment zone.

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

I played against tyranids with my SM, 1850 pts and I included a bastion with quad gun and he had a landing platform. The bastion was outstanding. Tyranid player rushed over in 2 turns to get to it in turn 3. He threw his main character at it, it took 2 turns for him to destroy it, I didn't mind as I pounded him for 4 wounds, finally finishing him off with sky hammer from my talon. The landing platform with its 4+ save is a good cheap buy, saved his final remaining unit until the end of turn 6.

I haven't used allies yet but I am going to look at IG hq, troop and a big tank for an apocalypse game.

Fortifications can be placed anywhere in your table half, not just your deployment zone. They must be completely in your half, but other then that there are no restrictions(aside from the 3" rule)

Appoc doesn't use a FoC anyway so Allies are pointless. Just take whatever you want.
