Ok, I admit to being a Noob, but I have been going over the Necron codex and the BRB, and have come to the conclusion that Phaeron upgrade achieves absolutely nothing, except to waste points.

Phaeron upgrade, gives the model and any unit he is attached to, the relentless special rule ( a model with the salvo, ordnance, or heavy classification count as stationary and can charge ), yet I when I look at the weapon list, in the back of the Necron Codex, the only weapons that I can see, that have those classification are those on vehicles ( which don't benefit from having an attached HQ with the Phaeron upgrade ).

Can someone please tell me what I'm missing?

You can shoot and charge rapid fire. Not that you'd want to charge Necrons with rapid fire guns to begin with, but you could.

That and you could theoretically upgrade a squad of wraiths with Transdimensional beamers and get to fire them on the move. Not that i'd particularly recommend doing so mind you, but it is a possibility. (and a heavy weapon equippable on a unit you can attach a Phaerun to)

I'm of the opinion it was put in simply to allow necrons to do what they now do in sixth without the upgrade

If im not mistaken, doesn't the pharoen upgrade allow the use of a court?

IIRC, according to the BRB, the only weapons that are affected are that have the Heavy, Ordance, and Salvo types, and as such Rapid Fire types are not affected.

All the Phaeron upgrade does is give the Relentless special rule to the Lord and any unit he is attached to.

It lets your 20 man warrior blob charge after shooting. Which they should absolutely not be doing. In any situation I can think of, I can not think of a reason to charge that couldn't of been solved by having the remnants charge you and get hit by 40 overwatch shots.

I found it desirable with a VoD squad. I like to VoD with my immortals to take out heavy tanks, in the following turn I can still rapid fire and assault vehicles for an easy kill with my Lord's Warscythe.

Yeah, it does prove useful for when I wish to assault in on troops who aren't great at hand to hand with my overlord and immortals after shooting. The lord pretty much cleans up with his warscythe without much risk to the other troops.

I have used it with Praetorians in 5th ed. I haven't used it since 6th came out so not sure how it will work with them now...

In 5th edition it let warriors move and shoot 24" which greatly increased their threat range. In 6th its pretty useless.

Praetorians have assault weapons or pistols, they cannot utilize Phaeron at all.

large IG platoon blob with lots of flamers/plasma guns/heavy bolters whatever. You dont want them FRFSRF you on the next turn.

I agree it is a rather small niche and probably a useless upgrade but every codex has useless upgrades, necrons fairly few. So deal with it.
