Perhaps you could provide aesthetic and playstyle preferences so we can help you.

well as for play style i have no experience and aesthetically I'm not hugely bothered, i was more interested in recommendation from peoples experience, i.e.. what they like and would therefore recommend

Well there is a lot of threads for this and it basically comes down to what army you like the best a combination of looks, fluff and then play style, roughly in that order. So to help you if you could give us a breakdown on a few armies you like based on the first 2 we can then help explain the play style to you.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Did you come from 40k? Fantasy is more about strategy then list building. Any army can perform well but there are some that are more forgiving. If you like an army then collect and play them make them work for you. If you could care less about an army and just want something to make you feel like a big man and beat down opponents don't play fantasy. All 3 of those armies can be good. Empire is always solid, however they have a new book and so they are still being tried and tested. Wood elves are a hard army to master but I've seen them do well. Bretonnia can be really good too a heroic killing blow lord with catapults that are devastating and cheap. Wood Elves and Bretonnia are in the works for new books but it could take 6 months or more, at last I checked there are 4 armies up for new books those 2, dwarfs and warriors of chaos. I do think Empire is probably your best bet if you like them and like being a "good guy", however they do require lots of infantry generally, unless you do a cavalry army which is an option as well..
