Snatched the pic off the Memphis battle bunkers Facebook page. My first best painted award...in fact the first time I ever showed up with an army that was painted in 1 solid color scheme. lol

Eeeked it out by 2 points, I probably got lucky since my stormtalon was not yet based, however the #2 person who's won multiple best painted had a couple more models not 100% than I did. Still I'm stoked lightyears from something like a gold demon, and nothing near half of what I've seen on here. lol

I like, particularly the mud on the landraider. Do you have any close up shots?

Pictures taken up close with my phone set to macro. Now you get to see how bad they really look. lol.

Also you can tell a huge lighting difference between the great lighting at the bunker, and my 1 lightbulb lighting in my apartment.

i'd personally like to see more shading/contrast on my models. especially those that have a dominant bright color like your IF do.
other then that its a really nice looking army you got there nice vibrant yellow and simple but effective weathering.

Dude they look sick, stop putting yourself down, its not easy making a nice yellow like that

They look great. Definitely an award you deserve. I wish others would see how rewarding 100% painting is on an army. Maybe your post will encourage others to take pride in their army and stop leaving things unfinished

I don't think flying bases need to be painted. To me, I find that the way someone bases a miniature on a tiny base is completely different than the final result on one 8x its size. It doesn't scale well, unless the person has a wonderful skill set.

Not saying yours wouldn't look good if you had completed it for the award, of course. Sure, it would have helped, but to me it's just one of those things that is okay to leave unbased!

Yeah I've been trying to decide how to base it. Would like to make it look like it just strafed something. Maybe have a shot up chaos marine laying down, vainly trying to shoot back with his bolt pistol or something.

Army of course is still a WIP. Decals are needs on several things. Some vehicles are in need of more weathering, and oil washes. Or what I refer too as micro painting. Where you go in and start adding small areas of detailed weathering here and there.

Will continue to work on it. So hopefully by next month if progress goes well I'll be ready for when the guy I beat by 2 pts finishes his necrons.

The vehicles rivets need a sepia pinwash,it will greatly enhance a very solid paintjob,well done
Then I would mix a small bit of plaster and graveyard earth and lightly flick a small amount on with a toothbrush,to get a nice dryer mud splatter effect.
I'd go a little lighter on the stack smoke,you want more yellow popping through.
You have an airbrush,get yourself some masking fluid and try this.
Basecoat the vehicle a dark rusty red like Dark Flesh/doombull,spray with Matt varnish to lock that layer in,then use masking fluid and a sponge and apply like you were doing chipping.
When that dries then paint the yellow and when the yellow dries,rub off the mask with your hand and you'll have a hundred year old finish.
Not trying to pick your army apart,I think it is very solid.
You need to practice weathering now,that is the next step.

Yeah some of the vehicles have not gotten their oil paint washes yet which will pop out the rivets, etc.

Like your masking idea though. Might try it on my next one. I've used it on IG tanks before although I just use toothpaste as my masking agent. Works like a charm.

I'm still adding more tactical marines. Might change a few things more wear, and white eagles I think I like them better than the current red.


This of course was the first I went a little overboard with the sponging. He'll just be Mr. Shrapnel catcher. lol

Cool, Red Chips with the yellow really look good.
Just remember unless it is a wreck less is more.
If you are feeling adventurous look into AK Interactive Rusting Streaks and Streaking Grime
Works like oil,ues same thinner,but is enamel and dries in 20 min.
But you can work it with thinner for a few hours,if too much you can still remove it until it sets which take about 6 hours
Comes a bit thick out of the bottle but it is meant to be thinned as needed.
A little thinner for wash,a bit more for a pin wash,and alot to make a filter.
I used to be big into oils for weathering before this stuff,now I use this way more and only use oils for fading.
I hate it takes at least 24 hours to fully dry.

I like the latest guy,now with super thin paint add a highlight to the bottom of the chip.
I totally agree,I hate red on my Imperial Fists. and I always do the trims black same as you.

Yeah if you look close you can see where I tried to use thin paint to highlight the bottom of the chips. However the marks were too thin, and too wide to give the proper effect.

Time to buy some new detail brushes.

Well didn't like the weathered look here's a new basic marine. Everything done except matte varnish.



Also as a side note the lighting in my apartment sucks. These guys are a bright yellow at the game store (good lighting) and almost a brownish yellow in my dungeon.

Canopy was non-repairable after the gloss varnish incident so I just painted it. Better than a semi-transparent fog look it had before.
