I am gathering info so that when I attempt to paint names in Papyrus style on my sorcerer bases they won't look like crap.

Do you all have any tips? Colors, steps, picture examples, anything will help me.

Thanks.

First tip: The Papyrus Font is so overdone as to be cliched and look bad.

Second Tip: I'd be impressed if you could actually manage that font so small with a paintbrush.
You could always get it printed onto an acetate sheet then glue it on?

Third Tip: I used a fine-liner to map out where I'll paint when doing text / freehand.

You're just quoting things now if you're going to harp about Papyrus Font, and I'm a graphic designer. Lets just say that Helvetica is so overused that the amount of times it's been used could rival the use of Papyrus as well as Comic Sans.

It's tabletop for christ's sake, I don't think the hipster across the table is going to complain about the use of Papyrus as a font for the basing. If he wants to use Papyrus and wants to use it for his bases, then I say it's fine. I'm not going to say "Ugh, Papyrus is so 2009", Avatar used it, and I don't think that hurt it's sales one bit. However, I will agree that it is less acceptable for someone spending millions of dollars to settle on Papyrus than someone who's playing in their local game store to use such a font.

It's also going to be no problem drawing in Papyrus font with a small enough paintbrush. If you can paint fine enough highlights and eye details, you're simply making straight line strokes with a little weight on the ends. And to get the "paper tear", nicks, etc, just use black to paint over the strokes to get the nicks into the font.

Now, Brometheus, if you're settling on Papyrus because it's the only font you could find close to what you're looking for, might I suggest a site like dafont.com, also 1001fonts.com to find a more wider range of fonts to select from. urbanfonts.com also has a nice visual gallery to select a choice of fonts from.

Well, it's for Egyptian styled/named minis so why not?

Thanks for the font sites, I am on them at the moment!

I can, in fact, paint very small. I've done kohl eye makeup on sorcerer faces. : ]

Thanks again, both of you.

I'm not 'just quoting things'. It's simple observation, people use Papyrus for so, so much and it's thrown out so much it irritates me...

Off the top of my head from in town I can think of at least half a dozen shop signs, a dozen + open / closed signs, another dozen+ in 'closed for lunch' / 'back soon' signs, random fliers, adverts, lists of acts at clubs, signs at pubs, upcoming releases at gamestores, posters, 3+ menus boards for restaraunts.... I think Lush uses it for their soaps labels... there's just this massive saturation of it that I cannot fathom and it'd be nice to see a bit more variety.

As it is - I don't think I'm good enough to paint things that fine, I haven't managed it so well thus far, but congrats if you are.

I didn't even know Papyrus was a font until this thread, when I read your post I assumed you meant to make it look as though it's been drawn on to Papyrus, as in, the paper-like stuff you write on.
