Second Tip: I'd be impressed if you could actually manage that font so small with a paintbrush.
You could always get it printed onto an acetate sheet then glue it on?
Third Tip: I used a fine-liner to map out where I'll paint when doing text / freehand.
You're just quoting things now if you're going to harp about Papyrus Font, and I'm a graphic designer. Lets just say that Helvetica is so overused that the amount of times it's been used could rival the use of Papyrus as well as Comic Sans.
It's tabletop for christ's sake, I don't think the hipster across the table is going to complain about the use of Papyrus as a font for the basing. If he wants to use Papyrus and wants to use it for his bases, then I say it's fine. I'm not going to say "Ugh, Papyrus is so 2009", Avatar used it, and I don't think that hurt it's sales one bit. However, I will agree that it is less acceptable for someone spending millions of dollars to settle on Papyrus than someone who's playing in their local game store to use such a font.
It's also going to be no problem drawing in Papyrus font with a small enough paintbrush. If you can paint fine enough highlights and eye details, you're simply making straight line strokes with a little weight on the ends. And to get the "paper tear", nicks, etc, just use black to paint over the strokes to get the nicks into the font.
Now, Brometheus, if you're settling on Papyrus because it's the only font you could find close to what you're looking for, might I suggest a site like
dafont.com, also
1001fonts.com to find a more wider range of fonts to select from.
urbanfonts.com also has a nice visual gallery to select a choice of fonts from.
