They are fine. I have three of them - the metal one, which actually looks close to former Citadel Chainmail, Dragon Red and plain black. With them I am not using any primers at all - the basecoat serves as a primer, You just have to pick the color accordingly. For example, for my small High Elves project, since many of models are wearing armor, I am spraying them with metal and then doing the rest.
After dipping they look like this - remember, there was no separate basecoat and just some minor highlighting.


And btw, all hobby stuff made by GW is heavily overpriced

Well, try doing a small test mini with chainmail and see if devlun mud will dull it down. AP spray is not exactly chainmail silver, it is a tiny bit darker, but still it is closer to chainmail than boltgun metal.
