Hey Dakka. I was focusing on the Troop section of a list I was building, and wondered generally about how many points everyone else puts into it. So for the poll, I'd like everyone to take the points they put into Troops, divide it by the total, and answer with what percentage of the total you're using up. Feel free to leave extra details below such as overall point count, army, style, etc.

Depends on the army;

Draigowing is like 70% troops.

Mech-Guard is around 40%

Aircav is around 25-30%

The list goes on.

Point limits also play a part, I recall one poster saying that for every 500 points increased, he would put one more troop unit in(with 500pt game having 2 troops, obviously), and I follow a similar rule myself as well.

As said by Baronyu, one troop unit per 500 pts should be enough.

With the new rules for multiple force organization, my Troop choices have been pretty adequate in most of my lists. I hover around 25-35%, depending on what the rest of my list is. Now that certain missions make it easier to claim objectives with non-Troop choices, it works well in your favor to bring balanced lists now, something that 5th edition didn't really encourage much.

In a 4K game, I typically bring

HQ: 15-20%
Troops: 25-35%
Elites: 30-35%
Fast Attack: 10-15%
Heavy Support: 20-25%

I play mostly Space Marines, and at the moment, my Fast Attack choices aren't great (although I'm enjoying playing my Assault Marines more and more though).

On moon miranda.

There really isn't any fixed % that troops should take up, though the conventional wisdom of 1 troop per 500pts works well for Marine and similar armies. Aside from that the biggest thing is to look at your list and think "Do I have enough units to threaten multiple objectives if I need to and do I have enough bodies to actually hold anything?" That varies highly depending on army and build.

I think it also depends on the survivability of the troops, 10 marines are going to last alot longer than 10 guardians ect...

I think the captain hit the nail on the head. The percentage is going to vary from army to army.

TEQ armies are usually 60% and up

MEQ- can be wildly variable

Horde- is like 50%

Mech-25-50%

It all depends on your army and what kind of list you are going to run.

Yeah for my foot IG lists I've usually got 50% in troops, even though I have between 10-20 scoring units in two troop slots.

The problem is it entirely depends on your army. There is no set answer, as thecaptain put it.

Obviously I needed to have the poll go to a little lower down on %s. I play guard, so the thought didnt really occur to me.

For those saying the number's going to vary, I know it does, that's why there's several options. I really just wanted to get an idea of what armies are going to be putting their points into troops and who aren't, and maybe find an average of just generally get a feel for what people are doing with their troops.

When I play my SoB, my troop point percentage is usually less than 25-30%. When I play my IG, it is in the 50-70% range depending on what in particular I'm running that day. As said before, percentage of troops varies widely from army to army as some armies' troops are better than others.

For a list I'm working on I have 50% troops... But I don't really go by percentages... I just make sure I have 3-4 troop choices at 1500 or greater.

The number and percentage breakdown of the troops choices taken by an army varies depending on the codex, and even the particular list. For example, certain armies, like C:SM Bikers and C:GK Draigowing, your entire army can be made up of models from the troops section of the FOC plus a single HQ choice. On the other side of the scale, during 5th edition both troop choices for Tau players were seen as weak, and thus it was not uncommon for players to run 2-3 minimized troops accompanied by armies full of crisis and broadside suits (however, due to the changes to rapid fire and overwatch making Pulse Rifle Fire Warriors extremely good, this has changed somewhat for 6th).

So in short, when building your list, consider what you need, how good the troops units are available to you, and how many scoring units you think you will need. If you are looking for a general rule of thumb, as other players have said, you run 1 Troop choice plus an additional Troop choice for every 500 points you include (500 pts you run 2, 1000 you run 3, 1500 you run 4, etc). But given how many armies fall outside this general rule, you really should not pay much attention to it.
