The thread title is a list concept that a friend and I have been brainstorming for a while to see if it can work. I came up with this:

Marneus Calgar in Armor of Antilochus - 265 points

Ironclad Dread in Drop Pod - 170 points
Seismic Hammer (underslug Melta) and DCCW

Ironclad Dread in Drop Pod - 170 points
Seismic Hammer (underslug Melta) and DCCW

7 Sternguard in Drop Pod - 215 points

Tactical Squad, full size; Flamer, ML in Drop Pod - 215 points
Sarge has Combi-Flamer

Stormtalon with TL Assault Cannon and Typhoon Missile Launcher - 155 points

1995 points

Thoughts?

EDIT: Keeping the Drop Pod theme, I decided to play around with the points and see what I could get dropping the Sternguard and Calgar. Here's what I came up with:

Termie Libby - 140 points
Null Zone and The Avenger
Has Storm Shield and Force Axe

Termie Libby - 140 points
Might of the Ancients and The Avenger EDIT: Just noticed that Might is only used on my turn. Ew. Depending on the opponent, this one will switch to use Biomancy powers.

5 points should get Ironclad Dread a Heavy Flamer which should be more effective than the Stormbolter. I also don't see the use of Armor of Antilochus or (for that fact) Calgar at all.

You have plenty of Melta and Flamer. Substituting Marneus Calgar for Vulkan and you have enough points to put more Sternguards with combis into that pod.

Why wouldn't you use Termie armor on Calgar? It makes him that much more beefy.

Calgar is there for the efficient use of Combat Tactics. Being able to have the option to auto-pass Morale tests cannot be expressed in words. Switching out Combat Tactics for anything else in the codex is one of the worst things that can be done now in 6th and is still thinking in terms of 5th.

And replacing the Storm Bolter for a Heavy Flamer is not 5 points

what about the "half of your army must start on the board" rule?

With 5 points you can at least give the Sternguard a combi-weapon. I prefer flamers on them myself.

Also, I might drop the combi-weapons on the Tac Sarges and put the points towards more combi-weapons for the Sternguard. The extra melta or flamer shot is nice sometimes but the TAC squads have regular meltas and flamers already. It feels like you aren't using Sternguard to the fullest without several combi-weapons in the squad.

Dropping the Combi-weapons on the TAC Sarges also frees up the points for a pair of Heavy Flamers for the Ironclad Dreads but i kind of like Sternguard combi-weapons better

Looks like Calgar would have to start on the board, but that'd be it.

Doesn't apply to drop pods. Drop pods are not counted towards your army total, so if your whole army consist of drop pods, 1/2 will come down first turn and the rest in 2, 3, or 4. Same goes for his flyers.

I like it, I have been waiting to see a drop pod list I like. I just think at 2000 its this list will fall a little short. Combat tactics IS good, but shouldn't be something to rely on. Something to build around indefinitely, use it as building block rather than a foundation. Going up against armies that don't want to charge you and want to pew pew instead will really give you trouble.

I agree with you, Vulkan would suit this list much better. It can leave you points for other good upgrades and such. Just my opinion.

Black Templars are the best Space Marine Chapter out of all the Space Marines. They are the most fanatical marines out there. They are on an endless, eternal crusade for the god emperor. AND they get in the face of the enemy. Thats the way to get things done.

My bad on the point cost of SB => HF on Ironclad. Perhaps I must be missing something big, can you elaborate more on what tactics you are hoping to achieve with Calgar auto-pass?

This statement is bizarre enough without you also claiming that 275pts just to auto-pass morale checks is worth it.

Calgar is best used for gunline armies as a counter assault, and where his auto pass moral and his orbital bombardment can make the most impact (no pun intended).

Cool deal and yes I have to ask the same question I see melta love all around this army list? So not Vulkan and the Libby.....it would make all those Melta shots that much more efficient.

Cheers.
