So i'd like to buy the dark vengence set, because there's alot of really nice models in it Unfortunately I play Ultramarines, so the Dark Angels wings everywhere is a bit of a turn off.

My question is does anybody know how much of the symbols is embossed? And how hard it would be to file them down. I've done this before with blood angels, so as long as it's not to crazy I wouldn't mind.

Has anybody picked it up, or seen the models yet?

If you check out the kit on GW's site you can see that the Dark Angels details are all very prominent and will be hard to get off without a lot of cutting and filing. The tactical arrows (Dark Angels use different ones than other chapters) and the Dark Angel insignia are moulded on details that stick out from the shoulderpads, the characters are all pretty overtly Dark Angels, and the only thing I could see getting turned into vanilla Marines are the bikers. The Ravenwing insignia isn't too hard to get off most of the bikes, and the winged front plate isn't that chapter-specific looking.

Oh I dunno, I've used the DA upgrade frame to make sternguard before, so I shouldn't think if you wanna save the kind of $ that DV will save (provided you play both armies) that it's not worth the little bit of extra work. Besides, you can only play a pre-codex army in which case markings will be far less exact or stringent.

The DA upgrade frame lets you use your own shoulderpads though; the bodies may have a moulded DA icon on them but that's about it. If you're skilled with a file you could definitely make the DA here generic:

But I dare you to de-Angel this guy:

the captain would not be hard to de-Angel, but there would be a lot of sculpting work to replace the symbols...

the Tacs, on the other hand, are easy enough the carve on the shoulder pads...
i found a sharp exacto shaved the Tac arrows off of the AOBR guys quite nicely...
a little file work after to smooth it out, and you're good to go...

plastic is easy to slice, cut, carve, and shave...
the only question is can you resculpt the areas where you have to cut away feathers, wings, and swords...
the Termies and characters look to be way more trouble than it's worth to carve up...
besides, you can make cooler poses with a box of Termies...

cheers

Don't a few Ultra models have symbolic wings of some sort anyway?

Personally I'd only bother getting rid of actual DA icons and leave the wings, maybe trimming some of the more outrageous ones...

PS coincidentally, i'm looking the exact opposite issue - turning my unassembled Space Hulk termies into DA to match the Dark Vengeance models. So wings aren't my problem, but endless blood drops are.

You could probably pick up AOBR marines for cheap now.

Hardest part would be removing the hooded skull belt buckle.

It's a nice model as is though, why bother to convert to UM when there are plenty of UM captain types that are far more suitable. sell it and use money towards buying a more UM looking model.

Dont convert them! Paint them in DA colors and take them as an allied detachment. Well thats what Im going to do anyway.

Frankly, I play pre-Codex Imperial Fists & they're master swordsmen per the fluff, even engaging in honor duels with swords to settle disputes, as such all of my veterans (regardless of armor type) bear a sword or winged sword somewhere on their person as their "honor blade" symbolism to mark their veteran status. Thus, it would only take minimal effort to make him an honor guard with a relic blade, alongside my other honor guard based off the DA upgrade sprue robed guys.

As a matter of fact, there's not a whole lot on the models that can't be left as-is, easily shaved off or replaced with a raised IF fist icon just like I've done with other models. Plus, BA are my allied detachment, though I operate them as "counts-as" BT or more to the point, members of Sigismund's personal honor guard on a holy quest to purge the traitorous taint from the galaxy (Death Company). Of course, the army is based around the Great Scouring, so it all works fine for fluff.

What do you think of the cultists though? Do you reckon you could convert some of them into Imperial Guard?

Gangers, first & foremost, for Necromunda. But I plan a chaos IG so they'll be just fine tbh.
