So I've been working on my demon prince for a while and have a question on the helmet. I've used a defiler and some green stuff (my first time using GS) to change up the head a bit, I really cant stand the plastic Dp heads. So my question is what should I do with the horns? If I use a wash, I'm afraid I will just stain the white as there is no contours for the wash to get into. I thought about dry brushing some browns or black but I'm just not sure. I have some pictures so you guys can see what I'm on about.
Keep in mind these are W.I.P as some of the gold and silver rubbed of and needs to be touched up, and don't mind the bluetac counter weight. Thanks for any and all input.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

I think it would look good if you did roughly the same effect on the horns as you did on the skulls on the base, although that may be difficult as how smooth they are.

I dont think that would work, I dry brushed them khaki then washed them with devlan mud, the lightly drybrushed them white, then washed them 50/50 sepia/devlan. So in the end the horns would look like dirty brown white.
At one point I was going to paint them black and used a gloss coat and make them like the horns on the devil in the movie Legend.
Any other suggestions?

I'd say use some Devlan Mud up under the brass tips, let it run down naturally.
And maybe instead of pure white, bring it down to bone.
Or, hit them with Devlan Mud/whatever until they are brown, then bring it up to bone/pure white on the most exposed areas.

Could paint the ridges on them yourself. In a similar pattern to Redbeard's Squiggoth here.

Thanks for the ideas.
I like the way the horns on the squiggoth look, any idea how he did it?

If you're having a hard time getting the natural look with the horns, I don't think they would look bad in a gunmetal color. Being that it's a helmet, they could just be metal.

Thanks for your input. I would really like to make it match my KBs since I plan to run this prince with them and lash people closer to the random charge length.
These are my KB's

The ridges on the squiggoth are actually sculpted into his horns, so they were done with a few washes and some drybrushing. They're really not comparable to the smooth ones on the plastic heads.
You'd need to get a fine tipped brush and draw all those little lines on in order to get the same effect, and without a very steady hand, it's going to look off.

After I sent that Pm i looked at the Squiggoth online unpainted and seen that. Either way your skills are most impressive. I think i'm going to just roll up fine GS ropes and try to make the ridges my self. With some patience it should be doable. I had some model A.D.D last night and worked on a Defiler I got off ebay for 20$. It was painted poor and I think they used JB weld to put it together. No amount of simple green / LAs TA is getting that thing apart. I even tried the freezer trick and nothing. I did make some progress on it though it a civil war surgery kinda way. Not sure why anyone would glue parts that aren't meant to be glued..... a shorty do-wrong is my guess.

While its hard to paint texture into a smooth flat surface, it can be done
Just start from a dark brown base colour and use fine lines around it, following the flow of the horns.
Then simply keep swapping to a lighter colour until your happy with it.
Granted it takes time and a fair bit of effort, but the overall effect is more than worth it
Even using a google pic to refer to will help alot when you 1st start it.
Also, i didnt even notice the GS until i read your post, so no issues there.
Base is simple and does'nt draw the attention from the model, which is nice for once as people can go over the top.
Only issues i'd have are the clean looking horns and if i had to be really picky, a few of the edging highlights are a little wonky, but other than that, ace job

It is WIP, I need to wash the highlights and retouch up the gold and the silver as some of it got rubbed off by me having an issue with one of the magnets in the wings.
Thanks for the feed back though.

Haven't tried any of them yet, so this idea could be totally wrong, but what about the new "texture paints" (or whatever they are called) of the new Citadel paint range? Could any of those add some texture to the horns allowing you to wash/drybrush them afterwards?
And by the way, hadn't even noticed the green stuff until you mentioned it, Good work there.

The textured paints are pretty much sand grain mixed with paint, so all it would really do is give a gritty type look to it :(

So I bought some tiny rubber bands and my plan is to put like 6 on each side of the horns, and then a small layer of GS over it and form the ridges. Not so sure how its going to come out but I guess you never know till you try. Wish me luck.

I have yet to finish the horns, but I did manage to fix something else that I really disliked about the DP, the hands. My wife asked why he was flipping the bird. After she said that, thats all I could see and really grew to hate the super fingers.
I really wished i would have decided to change them before I painted the Dp as I really did a number on the paint job converting the hands.
Let me know what you guys think of the new hands. The hammer isn't really for the model just kinda of a stand in till I make a better sword.
Also plus 1000 internet points if you can name where/what the hands came from.
