Waiting on the next book im affraid :(
Seen a playtest sheet that says 3 points per model and rumors say 4, but nothing solid yet.
But in general they will be cheap by the seems of it.

Nothing until the dex comes out for solid stats and upgrades and points.

However, if rumored at 4 points each, for 100 points you can get two really cheap scoring units to baby sit objectives. Keep them in reserves and hug cover to help with their longevity. Of course this is only if they are troops choices and/or allowed to score.

It works for grots, don't see why it shouldn't work for cultists.

I'd say just talk to your opponent and ask if you can bring them for 4 points a piece. I think they'll be between 4 and 5. They're a guardsman with a worse save. Depending on what they can take as upgrades, they should be around that price. 3pts per model seems stupidly cheap for them though.

3 pts, They dont have heavy weapons, only few commander options, no orders, so they are much worse than a guardsman. However they would be very good for 3 points (Reaction fire alone).

Heavy Stubbers and Flamers.

This could be a viable tactics. Maybe they can be made fearless or stubborn in some way.

Except grots are 3pts, with a weaker statline and gun and no armor. Guardsmen get 5+ armour, frag grenades, and a CCW at 5pts. So it's looking like a 4pt model.

yeah hence why the 4pts a dude arguement. Then just pay another 5 for the special weapon, and you should be golden. Maybe pay double for the "sarge" but other than that I'd say you should be good. It's a happy medium between the better equipped guardsman, and the far weaker grot.

The question is do they serve a purpose (troops)? Do they run away (low ld, fearlessness)?

the sarge is ld8 so not to shabby plus if they can be taken in squads of 20 like you can do with the cult troops they might just make it up the field

There is 3 things you can compare them with:

Guardsman: 5p, 5+ save, frag grenades, heavy weapons, orders, stubborn (with commisar)
Conscript: 4p 5+ save, ws/bs 2
Grot: 3p no save, ws/s/t 2, crappy gun

So if you look at the other similar units I would put them in the Conscript 4p league. They are worse then the Guardsman, but better then the Grot. And compared with the Conscript they have both pros and cons.
In the new codex I would assume they get some fancy chaos stuff however, maybe some chaos marks?

But while we are waiting for the new Codex, I would suggest using allied imperial guards. Get the primaris rogue psyker for the mandatory HQ. And a platoon for some nice cultists.

Agreed with Vombat. We're probably talking 4 pts, 10-30 in a squad with 1 Champion, 1 special weapon per 10 guys, and can possibly take a Chimera.

Not sure about them taking marks, but we'll see. A 6+ invulnerable save wouldn't be game breaking, nor would bumping their A or T up by 1 with the appropriate mark for +X points.

I'm wondering if the new Chaos Codex will have the 2-wound Space Marine champions that you can assign to a cultist-type squad similar to the Chaos/IG hybrid army lists in Imperial Armor 5-7 (Siege of Vraks)?
