Just quick yes or no question, with maybe a little reasoning if needed.

If your codex allows you to upgrade four members of your Dev squad to carry them, yes.

If not, no.

As long as it's a legal option in your codex. I believe most if not all of the SM codices do allow it.

The only way a squads armament would be illegal is if you took options not in the codex entry. Like a tactical squad with two heavy weapons.

Regarding four plasma cannons, some people get upset at this kind of loadout, especially if they play footslogging Marines. it can, afterall, vapourise a tactical squad in a turn. If you're at a tournament and want to run it, let them cry.

It's not like they won't be bringing their own brand of pain, and planning on using it on you, after all.

I'd rather face 4 plasma cannons than some of the cheesy crap i've seen served up at tournaments.

That squad used to be hated in our group in 3rd edition due to blast shots being more accurate, and our group playing primarily footslogging lists. It wasn't fun losing a whole squad in one turn because the sob using the squad never rolled a Gets Hot.

After we learned how to deal with it, he stopped using it.

I remember it well.

My orks never really cared that much, but my Necrons and CSM were less fond of it.

Still, compared to some of the more recent BS, it was still minor, and it came nowhere near the travesty that was Virus Outbreak (for my orks anyway..)

When you have the game designer apologise in a magazine and recommend that card be torn up, you know it was bad.

True that..

Now if only they would do that kind of stuff these days...

'please tear up your Necron codex (used for example only- feel free to sub in another ) and apply for a refund. We've just realized that it is broken as gak..'

Unless the tournament organizer specifically forbids some load-outs in the listing of allowed armies, yes.

Yeah, if it's vanilla space marines, you can take any combination of 4 heavy weapons max per devastator squad. The weird thing would to be bringing more than that. I very much don't want to face a squad with 10 Plasma Cannons in it, thank you very much ...

Past armies 4500 pts, 4000 pts 2000 pts

Oooh back when necrons had phase out spamming plasma cannons was evil, there was one ginger gakker who had a DA army with a dev squad like that, after a few weeks no one would play him.

Today with scatter its fine go for it.

When Necrons had Phase Out, spamming bolters was practically evil against them. Comparing anything to when Necrons had Phase Out isn't fair since they were the worst army in the game.

I don't understand why people are thinking four plasma cannons is overpowered or wouldn't be allowed in tournaments. The guys holding them are Marines and they die like Marines, they have Gets Hot! and they're not great against vehicles. I do enjoy using plasma cannons but I'd hardly bank my army's strategy on them.

If the codex says its fine then its fine.

My BA list runs 3 dev squads all with 4x plasma cannon as i used to face nids alot and a ton of power armour.
Its fun, but just remember that with alot of them you will lose a model here and there.

BA gets the plasma cannons cheaper, run them on the weekend in a mini tourny, they won me one game (relic, just spammed the middle objective with plasma cannon shots) and thats all they did all 3 games, first game they were placed too far back on a objective, second game was against drop podders who poded in right next to them and the third game they raped, for some reason my opponent decided to put his warlord in with the two tac marines carrying the relic when I had last turn and 4 plasma cannons left. He died, got me slay the warlord and first blood he had slay the warlord and no one had relic or linebreaker.

For my opponents one dude run three ghost arcs night sycthe and two annilhation barges or destroyers or something? from what I saw, luckly i didnt have to play him (very little AP1 bar my three attack bikes), one dude had a lot of nob bikers with 3 dakka jets, another had 3 storm ravens plus 2 dread knights and min squads I would guess another was SW in 4 pods with plasma x2 x2 melta and flamer GH squads, another dude was 2 vindicators and rhinos razorbacks and 2 dakka dakka dreads my last opponent was a lot of lascannons, too much thinking about it? plus a 3 razorbacks with IG allies with Vendetta and vets with metlas. This was billed as a friendly beginner tourny as well (I have been playing for 3 weeks, no one else there was a beginner!)
