The theory: If you're prepared for a zombie attack, the same preparations will help during a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake or terrorist attack.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency hosted an online seminar for its Citizen Corps organization to help emergency planners better prepare their communities for disaster. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year first launched a zombie apocalypse social media campaign for the same purposes.

Emergency planners were encouraged to use the threat of zombies – the flesh-hungry, walking dead – to encourage citizens to prepare for disasters. Organizers also noted the relative proximity to Halloween.

Among the government's recommendations were having an emergency evacuation plan and a change of clothes, plus keeping on hand fresh water, extra medications and emergency flashlights.

A few of the government's suggestions tracked closely with some of the 33 rules for dealing with zombies popularized in the 2009 movie "Zombieland," which included "always carry a change of underwear" and "when in doubt, know your way out."

I think it's funny that the .gov has jumped on the zombie band wagon because I've always thought it was an awful interesting coincidence that the militias disappeared and all of a sudden there was a zombie craze. Now you aren't an unwashed, stockpiling, separatist; you're an unwashed, stockpiling, quirky zombie prepper. That's the only way it makes sense to me.

The wife, who loves to talk about new businesses to start, is talking about a doomsday prepper store. I must admit this one is an interesting idea (ok her idea of moving it from "safe location" to "safe location" as a stunt was wacky).

Meh. The leasing issues alone would make it a headache, let alone moving stock, and if you sell guns changing your location for your FFL.
A friend who sells guns in OK and I came up with a nifty idea we call "Prepper Packs" A Mosin 100rds, a fishing kit, survival guide, some rations,etc. the price point is pretty low and the profit per unit is actually pretty high. He and a guy in Iowa are selling them at gunshows with great success. I chose not to go to shows, but the model is sound.

Yea I know. Some of her rleated ideas were better on the topic - marketing related.
However the concept of a prepper is not too bad. Its not too different than a sporting goods store/army surplus. Me I'd rather own a firearms store for obvious reasons. Because we all know in Texas there aren't enough gun stores...

(now that I think about it, there are 4 within 15 minutes of the Austin house).

Don't be silly they obviously mean things which pertain to the other disasters. Like stealing the neighbours four by four and looting pharmacies for antibiotics.

They've been doing this for a while now and it's pretty clever. Basically, it's a way to encourage teens and young adults who would normally never give a single thought to disaster preparedness a way to learn what to do in an emergency.

They pull you in with the zombie apocalypse joke, but almost all of it is real, common sense, emergency preparedness info that you would see in any other manual. First Aid, water purification, wilderness survival, treating shock, getting rescued, what to stockpile (water, canned food, etc.), what to do in a viral outbreak.

It ends up "tricking" people into learning actual skills that might just save their life some day. Heck, there are volunteer groups that do the same thing doing "zombie preparedness courses", when really all it is is a basic survival seminar. But it's cool, quirky, and pulls in people who need it the most. I think it's a brilliant plan and I wish the government did more stuff like this. It's a great way to get people who normally could care less to actually prepare themselves for a real emergency. Even if they only take away a few things from that seminar, it's far better than them knowing nothing at all.

And hey, if you're prepared for zombies, you're prepared to handle ANYTHING

And they say folktales are dead. Some kid on Jeapordy for kids didn't know Paul Bunyan's Ox name. I thought old Alex was going to slap him, he actually looked surly and indignant for a second.

I dont know the name of his ox. But i remember quite a bit of the legend, Largest man in the world, became a lumberjack.
And then there was another one where a man who made rail roads beat a machine that did. but died in the process.
We actually had a part of second grade dedicated to folktales.

Rifle vs tornado? The trick is getting the round into the air intake. Bangor Maine had a zombie drill not too long ago, don't remember if it was a CDC or FEMA drill, but it took place right after some govt. Agency was on a "there is no zombie virus, it was a humor piece" campaign.
