Would anyone happen to know where I could buy some 28mm mines(though the scale doesn't have to be exact) for use in some minefields I'm making to go along with my Chaos warband? I noticed GW used to sell a set, though that's no longer available, as is there a Forgeworld one that I'll probably pick up. I can scratch build them, but I'd rather at least have some ones in there of decent quality (having up to 18 of them is going to require a lot ^^).
Additionally I'll probably be adding some assorting bits of decor like tank traps, razor wire and the like for a bit more interest in case anyone wonders.

Would love to know this question as well. I remember reading th rules for clearing mine fields for grots. It's a shame I never see minefields used in any battle reports I watch. I guess their just not that popular.

^^ I just feel like taking them because I love making muddy trench/city themed terrain. I mean my Guard army are from a desert planet and yet they're based on ruined, muddy urban bases (blame Imperial logistics). Having up to eighteen 8'' x 4'' minefields on the table just seems like such a laugh (despite my last battle being against Imperial Guard, where not one of my foe's models moved at all ¬¬). ...We'll glaze over the question why an invading force would be laying minefields. Hmn, though I guess I could always easily come up with some fluff reasons why-ie the enemy's attacking one of my warband's recruiting worlds, or the renegades have prepared for the assault, or...
Though...they rules are a bit terrible come to think of it, seeing as its only the models touch the minefield that take the damage. Ie, they could simply move one model onto the field to disable it. Then again that does mean they're either going to have to find an alternative route, wait a turn whilst one model takes it out, or take x strength 6 hits against their squad. I play Chaos, tactics don't come into it. XD
Actually... Ooh, bloated corpses in lieu of the Floaters from Dead Island would be a nice addition for some of he fields (amongst the existing corpses that is). Youknow, exploding with loaded up poisonous gasses. ..."For an additional 40pts, all minefields may be upgraded to count as poisoned. Note, no points are refunded for those minefields that are not placed".

Tau shield drone shield generators look nice and mine-y, but they are a bit big. AT mines perhaps? AP mines are already pretty small and I can imagine that 40,000 years of development will make them even smaller. So you could probably just get away with cutting off small chunks of plastic rod in the same way that rivets get done and scatter them liberally over the minefiled base (in between the AT mines?)

^^ I've actually already got 40 odd anti personel mines made from bits of sprue.
Sheild drones/generators could work, though I used most of the ones I had ages ago for a Tau Jetbike commission. Hmn, might have some gun drones somewhere though. Reminds me of the minefield tutorials from the 4th edition rule book where tau space stations were used as floating mines.XD

I'm not uptodate on rules and such.. but I like this idea, never see anyone playing with minefields on the table. Seems like something Imperial Guard would do when on the defensive. Or Marine Scouts during forward deployment.
They were in Dawn of War for all the teams in some for or another I think.
The trouble with modeling a realistic mine field... is that you would hide the mines! The whole point is that the enemy would be caught unawares and step on them by accident.
If an area is clearly a mine field for all to see, it only acts more as impassable terrain. and mayaswell be water or something else impassable on land. To clear a minefield should take much longer than the duration of an average few turns in a battle unless it was simply done by stepping on them with some sacrificial unit *looks at the ork players*

Balancing realism, with playability. I could very well put down a base covered in dirt and call it one, but it wouldn't be immediately obvious what it was unless I told my opponent. To that end I'll be sticking in some bits of fortification (ie existing bits and pieces the cultists have added to with the mines) and the usual blown up soil, etc. I would imagine that, for simplicity's sake, that the guys who laid them did it in a real hurry, so they weren't all covered up efficiently (or they're just that inept). Perhaps there's been some shelling, or some mines have blown up to dislodge a couple from their positions or mess up the dirt covering them. I donno, I just like the idea of a big bit of obvious danger for my opponents to worry about.
The rules do really imply that the guy standing on them is either a meatshield unit, armoured behemoth, or desperate. The average mine is an instant death to a human model or the equivalent on a 4+. Ironically the only "human" army that I regulary play is the Imperial Guard, and well, most of the guys that play them don't manoever all that much (bar the renegade force XD). Hey up to 12 mines and a Leman Russ Annihilator (on top of my existing Marine force, Obliterators/Dreadnoughts) has got to do some damage. ^^

Oh for sure, it could even be an old known minefield form a previous confilct, with a random chance of them being still live! hehehe

What hppened to the actual mines within the game? You see them in photos within 5th ed book I believe but that is the last they are ever mentioned?

You mean actual GW made models, or rules for them in game? I think they operate like Dangerous terrain, or a model takes a str 3 hit on a 6+ or something to my recollection. Not impressive. Models were produced, but on a limited run though (linked in first post). =/

I'd suggest 1:35 scale model mines, I have one from somewhere but don't know what kit or such it came from. Best bet would be infantry accessories boxes or battlefield accessories (I've seen tank traps, barbedwire, etc).
Alternatively, have a look at bits sites for the Ork Boyz tankbusta bomb (there's a separate bomb, and one arm with bomb), looks like a mostly flat round mine with a handle. If you go down the scratchbuilding route you can make all sorts of booby traps with grenades, mortar rounds and artillery rounds.

I remember making a couple of minefields back in 3rd/4th edition. You can find a lot of suitable parts at the hardware store. The easiest way to go about it is to buy a ton of washers, then use a hole punch in plasticard to make a circle cover the middle of the washer. Add in some rivets, and viola! a mine.

one way to get decent-ish sized mines is to go and pore through all of your sprues. See a round nib sticking out? Lop it off. it's decently sized, and with only a wee bit of work, turns into a decent exposed mine. You could use any other bits as well, like for instance a melta bomb.
last, but not least, you could simply create a field that's got a bunch of posts hammered into it, with little placards featuring one of these signs:
and call it a day.
