So you may or may not have heard that my samurai orks army never got off the ground, the ork heads were twice the size of the samurai heads. So I'm sitting here with a boatload of samurai and the idea pops into my head to use them as IG (converted to GW allowable standards of course) and seeing as my Alpha Legion successor chapter needs a homeworld, the samurai can be the PDF that runs around with them everywhere.
The basic story is that the planet was recently discovered by Rogue Trader Perry in a feudal state. Due to its central location near pirate hotspots it was chosen for the homeworld of the Serpent's Shadows, and they have used their ability to have a warrior cult to fuse the local's religion with a synchrotized version of chaos worship with the names filled off. For example the four chaos gods are referred to by locals as the Four Great Beasts. This is allowed because the chapter has a stable of brainwashed inquisitor agents (inquisitors who tried to investigate them) who sing their praises and accuse anyone who attempts to attack them of heresy.
Meanwhile the chapter master of the Serpent's Shadow is functionally immortal, because when he dies he activates his clone that he has secreted away among one of the noble families of the planet, and the clone acquires all his memories from his "father" and begins to transform into an exact copy of the chapter master (with a few minor quirks, like a feeling of attachment to the people he knew in his human life like his adopted family or romantic involvements, some of which carry over in the memory transfer)
As far as the people, they want to go back to before Perry came, back to when they were ruled by the Shogun, and not the Emperor. Some whisper away from imperial ears that the chapter master is in fact descended from the last shogun, and they're right. The original chapter master was once the prince of the planet, but when the Shogun was killed he found himself joining the alpha legion and riseing in the ranks until he was picked to head a long term mission to his old homeworld, the formation of the Serpent's Shadows.
This is just the basic stuff that I'll expand upon with characters and other stuff, but for now how's my fluff? Is it good? What parts do I need to work on?

EDIT: opps just realized this was more about my CSM chapter than the guardsmen Anyways, as far as the planet goes the chapter rules in a hands off manner, wars sometimes break out between local daimyo and this provides their men with needed experience in combat (that's why the chapter allows this) One of the few parts that was welcomed by the people for joining the imperium was the rapid increase in tech levels, where as a generation before they fought with spears and cavalry, a generation after they fought with lasguns and tanks.

Damn. Im gonna just say this. Change it from Perry. I get the history thing but thats just OTT with the accuracy. And if you do go with perry, I demand a video recording of you singing the ghost busters theme and renaming your warlord Bill Murray when you fight an army with Mordrak's ghosties

The Peripheral

Makes sense, the shogun seems a bit mary sue being able to just "reform".... perhaps a more dire consequence such as a grimdark version of House of the Scorpion where his clones have to be a certain age and experience the horror of having themselves harvested so the shogun can live again. Sounds a bit like the Emperor's Sensei when you think about it lol

Mostly it was to explain how he comes back after taking a railgun to the face, he's not just wounded he's well and truly dead. But the memory transfer isn't perfect, personalities stay the same, and the memories transferred depend on how quickly the chapter master dies, if he dies a slow and agonizing death every bit gets transferred, especially the final moments of agony. If he dies quickly the memories transferred are more to the point: this is what you need to know to run the chapter, these are the important people you've met, and this is what you've done to them. The chapter master makes a lot of comments about "I've Xed a lot of people, you can't expect me to Y all of them." Essentially the person before the memory transfer is the same as the person after, information is just added. Also think about growing pains you experienced as a child, now think of growing about three feet in a few weeks. Yea it hurts like you wouldn't believe. all the while memories invade your mind. I just kept it short so I didn't get any TL;DR.

EDIT: also there's only one clone at a time, otherwise they'd all activate at once and all think they were the real one, and cue a civil war. so he's got all his eggs in one basket, if the clone dies before he does he needs to not die until the clone matures (because then you would have a chapter master with the mind of a child, and we don't want that)

Also I'm not good with remembering the ghost buster's names, but for sheer lulz if this army ever comes up against Mordrak I may be tempted to sing the song through a space marine voice modulator (if I can find one)

I like it, perhaps however, wait for Chaos 6th Edition?

The Chaos cultist could make awesome Ashigaru.

Also, I demand some reference to Oni creatures, perhaps masks on the CSM.

Waaagh!

Actually the ashigaru will be the basic guardsmen in the IG army, samurai are the vets and officers. The cultists I call "agents" they're the intelligence assets for the chapter. They're not good enough to be professional soldiers. Also this is for the new codex, I'm just working on the IG to keep busy.
As far as the oni sorry no oni, but I do have other yokai. The current chapter master's significant other got turned into a Jorogumo to better serve chaos. She's either the sorceress in my CSM army or the lord commissar in my IG army.

EDIT: BTW this will probably be the theme song to the IG army at least, unless I can signifigantly theme the CSM otherwise they get a different theme song.

Alpha Legion successors?

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Ah yes simple explanation for that. Here's the plan:
Step 1) cause problems for sector.
Step 2) use agents to entreat the high lords for a space marine chapter.
Step 3) hijack inbound ultramarines and replace the gene seed and instructors with alpha
Legion stock.
Step 4) profit.
