I normally play SW or SM and focus on shooting. I would like to throw some cheap units at my enemy's deathstar (typically paladin, TWC, Nidzilla) so I can shoot an extra turn or two. What would these units be? Attack bikes? Speeders? Blob foot guards? Just 5-man marines rapid firing in front of their face?

I am aware that if I stay in front of my enemy and just shoot rapid fire, by positioning my sergeants all the way in the back, he won't be able to accept/refuse challenges and thus will be able to fight normally.

Space marine scouts with sniper rifles are fairly cheap. You can move them in front of their deathstar and snap-fire with the sniper rifles. Not great, but getting a rending shot with the sniper rules once in a while will be fun as hell.

Stubborn blobs are more tar pits than speedbumps though. What about taking full 10 man marine squads and combat squadding them with just 5 bolter marines. Then the sarge can be kept in the other more shooty half and can't be challenged anyway.

a 10 man scout squad, hidden in cover or obscured by terrain out in front of you main army can be useful, just make sure they stay a low priority target as they are fragile. If you give them shotguns and ccw and charge them into the deathstar they might get to speedbump it for a round if they survive the first round of combat. Not the best chance of it, but all I could think of off the top of my head.

I would use your empty rhinos for the speed bump. You move the rhino into their death stars face. The enemy has two choices, shoot the rhino and if it is wrecked or explodes then that causes some difficult terrain for the death star to have to go around or through. if they assault the rhino same thing happens, and they don't get a consolidate move for killing a vehicle. This will slow them down and allow you at least one more turn for shooting. Don't forget to position the rhino to block some of the death star so you can focus fire on their characters or special/ heavy weapons.
