Hey all, I just finished up a leather commissar's hat I've been working on for a couple of weeks. It's made from 4-6oz vegetable tanned leather so it's very sturdy. The details are resin and styrene, and the entire thing is hand stitched.
I began by taking a big block of foam and carving a commissar hat out of it. I used that foam hat to make paper templates which I transferred to the leather. Then it was just cutting and assembling the leather. The skulls (big one and two little ones on the sides of the cord) were all cast resin from molds I already had - the big skull from the Crux Terminatus and the little skulls from my Imperial Guard medals of honor. The little skulls are screwed on and the big skull I cast with 2 bolts set into the resin, so it's definitely not falling off! The laurels are styrene plastic and they're actually stitched on down the center so it looks kind of like the stem of the laurels.
Horatio, my little workshop assistant and servitor in waiting, refuses to take it off now that it's done!
