Hey folks.
Im starting a space wolves army and I wanted some help on where to go i.e. what pack or wolf lord.
Im good for painting and stuff its just all the fluff with 40k and especially space wolves.
I've made my own space marine chapter in the past but i did this by reading the how to paint space marines and looking at a lot of dakka pages, but what do you have to do with space wolves.
Its a bit of a stupid question I know that, but does each wolf lord have his own pack (are these like company's in regular marines or are they a seperate fighting force with their own shoulder pad designs, rules etc...)
One last thing, is army painter wolf grey spray a good start. I like to base coat spray all my models i find it saves time.
Any help on space wolves markings and organisation would be a great help thanks.

My best advice is buy the codex & the battleforce, both are a decent ground level. From there, read the background & story of each of the great companies as listed & decide if you like any of them.
As a rule of thumb, the sky's the limit when it comes to color, style, markings, etc per Wolf Lord. Each great company bears his heraldry on their left shoulders instead of the chapter's. Individual pack markings go on the right shoulder. Typically, the wolf guard pack marking in a great company is that of the wolf lord, only in the yellow & black of the wolf guard instead. That's about it honestly, there aren't a whole lot of hard & fast rules with Space Wolves in terms of organization, paint schemes, markings, anything.
I have no experience with army painter anything, unfortunately, I use a flat grey primer from wal-mart personally for my space wolves & build upon that for a more neutral, less blue, grey.

The insignia on the left shoulder pad for space wolves is their great company, so that will depend entirely upon which wolf lord you pick, although you could create your own if you felt so inclined.
The right shoulder pad is marked with that marines pack markings, which can again be anything really, but its generally geometric shapes, so a lot of triangles etc.
Rune priests, wolf priests and iron priests, have their left shoulder pad with the Great Wolf insignia, as they belong to him and then are attached to the company.
Army painter is fine, I haven't used it personally as I basecoat using an airbrush, but lots of people do use it. I would suggest as always with any aerosol primer to test it on a scrap of sprue or an old model you don't care about.

Get the codex and have a look at that. There's no "rules", but that has a guide of how the chapter is organised and how insignia is used. Basically you have 12 great companies, each one being it's own entity with it's own vehicles, terminators, grey hunters, blood claws, etc, all under a Wolf Lord. So there's not a strict organisation like other chapters. I could spend a paragraph describing the insignia and force organisation, but it's all written in the codex

I used to use the Army Painter Wolf Grey color and I wasn't a fan of it; I used to paint my Space Wolves with a lighter blue to match the box art but I have slowly been trying to darken the color up to give them a more gritty look. I also could never find the perfect conditions for the spray. Sometimes my models would come out fine and others there would be a gritty texture to them. If you like the brighter blue though, then it might be the stuff for you.

Thanks for the info folks.
Ive got an earlier edition of the space wolves codex but again Im struggling to make sense of it, heraldary and marking wise.
Thanks for the info on the spray too, I was gonna get the citadel spray gun for basing, might just do it now, I would love a real airbrush but I dont think I'd use it enough to justify price and setup time.
