Something that runs up on you, engages you, and sticks you in place for as long as possible, usually to take a dangerous unit out of the game without killing it.

I am not sure about their use as a strict tarpit, but iron fangs with the normal red UA are quite a strong jam unit with their minifeat. allowing extra movement after a run to further advance and get into shield wall.

The old Winter Gaurd and Kayazy tarpits are just about dead in the new competetive meta. Collossals and and a prevalance of Purification in the new Staem Roller enviroment make the super high DEF low ARM build out dated. Most players have a list for this build now. time to rethink Khador lists and take a second look at IFP. @Dais, take a look at the errata, you have not been able to run and use the IFP mini feet since January I think. You need to have your movement and action available to you when you use your mini feet and light cav move now. If you run that ends your activation immediately after you finish running. You need to have your action available to you to use mini feet. Here it is: IRoN fANG PIkEMEN offICER & sTANdARd. dEfENsIvE foRMATIoN. Replace the second sentence of Defensive Formation with the following: Immediately after models in this unit complete their actions this turn, models in this unit other than this one can make a full advance, any previous orders this unit was issued expire, and this unit is affected by the Shield Wall order.

ahh my mistake. I tend to miss the subtleties of other factions' errata.
They still have a lot of jam potential by charging in with reach then moving to engage a lot more than they would normally be able to get to The extended range is essentially traded for going deep into enemy lines and disrupting their formations.
I also think there is still room for high def low arm infantry, but they can't be your army's backbone any more. The low accuracy melee beaters that excel at wrecking colossals sometimes struggle dealing with those same high def infantry making a nice cycle of checks and balances. I suppose in this respect tarpitting heavies is one of the greatest values high def infantry brings, they just have to dodge aoes on the way to the target now.

I agree.
Fast moving high def infantry perform well on a flank, though.

In regards to the mini feat discussion, couldn't you just use the mini-feat first THEN run? Like all the other "during this model's activation" tactics.

A model that runs does not have an action to complete and thus cannot benefit from the minifeat, is what I'm guessing. Automatically Appended Next Post: However, you CAN use the mini-feat to get the Shield Walled Iron Fangs
up closer on turn 1, especially if you are going second.
Going first I think it's often just safe enough to run turn 1.
Going second, however, makes running less safe. If you NEED the
12" move, though, you can use the minifeat to advance the unit twice
and in shieldwall.

Oh I thought you were talking about mini-feats in general. I was going to say, this guy I know running Zealots has been using that monolith very incorrectly if this is the case....

The Menoth Zealot mini feet specifically state, at any time during the activation you can use Greater Destiny.

you can minifeat and charge though, correct?
i find MenoWar in an eIrusk list work extremely well. the new meta is bringing heavy infantry into play more, i find. which is a good thing. but yeah, arm21 in shieldwall, 8 hits each, and tough. rock on

Yes.
However, if you declare a charge and fail, your activation ends, not
triggering the minifeat.
What the minifeat does is give you a turn where you don't have to
choose between shieldwalling and charging.

^^ which is the linch pin of shield wall units. Without shieldwall, they arent going to survive a whole lot, thus they cannot fulfill their duty of being a tarpit.
How has the "meta" effected heavy infantry effectiveness? Automatically Appended Next Post: I still find great success in Kayazy assassins as a tarpit. I find that people just do not have enough means of killing them in most situations, and their high DEF usually means I can just run them into my opponent's army without worrying about them getting killed. Also - Their MAT is so great, they have no problem hitting high DEF models, which was always a problem for many of my lists.

I think the biggest meta-changer that people talk about with collossals is the Stormwall. The ability to lay down two covering fire templates a turn creates a 7" wall of a no go zone for Kayazy. Add in B-13 and Ryan's AOE and they can block about half the board to all but the toughest units.
I think conquest has a similar ability and also just big AOEs. The Menoth Colossall also can lay down a ton of AOEs. Cryx one not so much, but they have plenty of other ways to deal with things like Kayazy.
And I have nothing in particular to refer to, but in general I have noticed more things that ignore or remove defensive upkeeps. Not sure if there are just more lately or if people are conciously taking them.

I'm not a huge fan Kazazy Tarpit. Much to often it ends up in a straight line of Kazazy's thinking they are superman.
Easy ways to get rid of them.
1. Slam a jack through them. Auto hitting power 12's kill's assassins. Get a good angle, take out most of the bunch. Using your own jacks usually results in minimal damage.
2. anything that's AOE. target your own model that's usually lower defense, splash into the Kaz's. Even half power usually is enough.
Most armies at tournment level can do the above. As a result I am starting to prefer, Iron Fleshed Pikeman, they are dramatically safer due to shieldwall, and people tend to not want to trample them due to blasting pikes that can crit knock down a model from free strikes.
In the end, its all about your Meta. My area is heavy Assassins, so people are prepared. I've gone out of the area to steam rollers a few hours away and also seen none of them.

I play Skorne and find high def units (I play circle a lot, so Def 16 warbeasts are common) to be a pain in my arse. Needing 8+ to hit is never fun.... and I play Makeda!
That said, I can see the point with factions like Menoth being common, and things like Kreoss and Sorsha just lolerskating all over high def infantry. All this talk makes me want to really run some Zaal action... hex blast ftw!
