This is a request for tips & tricks for the Stormraven.

Good tactics, effective ways to use it, deployment, limitations, ideal transport units etc

(Edit: BA specifically but generally too, cheers!)

The Blood Angels Stormraven is best used as a gunboat. If I could somehow make the model cheaper to remove its transport capacity I would. I hate the rules for disembarking and I hate how a flyer exploding essentially wipes out everything that is inside.

So far I've found the Assault Cannon and Multi-Melta to work great. The Blood Strike Missiles are great too. I find myself destroying most vehicles with ease. The only problem is their limited movement and their arc of fire sucks when you get too close as a weapon can only fire 45 degrees further than it can see. This is the biggest limitation besides how the Stormraven is forced to move in Flyer mode.

IMHO, the stormraven took a bit of a hit in 6th. It was much better in 5th. I agree it's better used as a gunboat, but it's a damn expensive one. You are paying points for its transport capacity, and the assault ramp, but you can not use them until 3rd turn at the earliest! Yes it's a tough flyer, with a multimelta, but being forced to start it in reserve, really, really sucks. If you want a flying gun boat vendettas/valks a much better.

So it completely bombs if you try to use it as an assault vehicle as well?

Its not that it bombs, but it just sucks if it gets taken down and you haven't unloaded your cargo. Your cargo essentially dies. The assault ramp is awesome, but you can only use it during Hover Mode. Presumably you would only do this if all the AA threats were taken care of which is during turn 4 or 5 if at all. This means that most of the game the guys inside did nothing, making them a waste of points.

Secondly a lot of people can't agree how the Deep Strike from wherever it went flew over works. Some people argue that its only during Hover Mode. I say that's not true, but the argument stands.

The best thing about the Stormraven is all around AV12. Its the toughest flyer to eliminate. Even other Stormravens will have a hard time.

So even a single dreadnought is too much of a risk? I thought transporting something in a flyer, for delivery on turn 3 is a reasonable paced time frame for an assault vehicle.

You have to go in to hover mode IIRC to drop off the Dreadnought and even if you don't have to, forcing the Dreadnought to take a Dangerous Terrain test if it scatters can be fatal unless you are taking a long range shooty Dreadnought, but why would that be in a Stormraven to begin with?

Right, the fact that it's one of the few units in the game that has the whole meta scrambling to try and deal with it (unsuccessfully in many cases) means it got worse? It can shoot more than before, and is ridiculously harder to take down. Where is the problem here? Where is the part that says it is worse? The fact that it can't reliably transport dudes anymore? It's not like typical BA lists need such a thing.

I use mine to carry an allied BA detachment. As others have said, it's a bad idea to put too much inside it. I've been toying around with the idea of transporting termies with it in games of 2000 pts and higher. I haven't tried it yet though.

Armored Company since White Dwarf 296 and don't you forget it.
