I did a basecoat of black, then covered them in Tin Bitz. Afterwards a thinned down coat of chainmail. Then I used devlan mud and added a selfmade kind of sandypaste made from bestial brown and some modelling sand (on the wheels it's one of the new texture colors by GW). Another heavy wash with devlan mud and finally some drybrushing with underhive ash. A watered down troll slayer orange was used to indicate some rusty spots here and there. As it is a layer paint, it blends nicely over the bestial brown.
Maybe you can leave out the tin bitz coat, as it doesn't really shine through... At some point i also tried out some heavily watered down snakebite leather or vermin fur, but that didn't work out well and seems to eb covered by all the devlan mud layers!

the treads on my rhino were done by a friend of mine: black undercoat, then steel legion drab, a drybrush of underhive ash and finally a drybrush with boltgun metal (sorry for the lousy picture. I hope you get the idea). He used an airbrush for this model btw., but I think you might get a good result with a brush, too, as it's not a flat area!

With steel legion drab you get a dry dust-like effect, with other brown tones you get a more muddy appearance.
