I'm doing an old school ultra paint scheme. Using yellow instead off gold and red on the weapons. I am confused on the power fist though. We're they painted in red as well or did they stay the same color as the power armor?

They remained blue. I always wondered what the history behind that switch was. Obviously the newer look is more grimdark, but when did it happen and what caused the changed?

As is shown, they were blue. Still, I think that red on the hand (not finger parts) of the power fist would look quite striking and not out-of-place.

As for why the change, I'm not sure, but it's not just the UM's. My blood angels had black edges on their shoulder armor when the shoulder pads with edges made their appearance (just before 2nd edition) and contrasting knee pads. Now that is gone and they are portrayed as much more uniformly red. Also the color has gone from orange-red of RT/2nd edition to blood red in 3rd, to a much darker red now.

As well as the progression to more grim-dark, there seems to be the trend of less ornamentation in the paint scheme and more ornamentation of the actual model itself. (i.e. less bold paint contrasts and more purity seals and iconography)

I'm a fan of the old Heavy weapons. I have a 2 missile launchers, a heavy bolter, and a lascannon in that style. It's just fun and gets a lot of attention at my LGS.

Well yellow is generally used to represent gold in heraldry, it's sort of a logical step. As for the weapons, not sure I guess like the yellow to gold they figured this new change looked a bit better. Overall less cartoony anyway.

I like the brighter colors myself. It makes the models pop more and they stand out from the tabletop. The gold tends to blend in with the blue and makes the models appear darker.

Not_u - Actually bud, the old yellow weapons were because they were heat based and dangerous
Look back at some really old armies painted by GW.
You will find most have the yellow schemes on heat based weapons lol.

they changed to gold from yellow. that colour indicates what company they are from. gold/yellow is third company.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.
