I keep seeing references to Black Dragon (I think) upgrades for our IFP. I am wondering where do I get the rules for them? I just got Wrath and Colossals in and didnt see them mentioned.

They are not in any of the books. Their rules were posted in a No Quarter and the upgrade kit can only be purchased from PP's online store.

General sense is they're pretty equal to the normal Ironfang Pikemen UA. Not better, not worse, just different.

Do you know which No Quarter?

NQ 40.

I think you can run the BDP a little more aggressively than you can the IFPs since the mini-feat is anytime rather than at the end of activation which gives you more flexibility to run forward and feat to pretend you're in Shield Wall.

Thanks Ronin, I've read in another thread that the BDP can run and use the Mini feat? Is this correct?

Yes. You have to do it prior to running though.

Black Dragons are meant to be more defensive, while the
the original Iron Fang UA is meant to make Iron Fangs more
aggressive. The Black Dragons have staying power via a banner
that makes them fearless and a minifeat that buffs their ARM
and *prevents them from being knocked down* (huge).

The regular UA lets your Iron Fangs attack, mini feat, then plug
holes in the line. It also lets you charge with the Iron Fangs and
then end in Shield Wall. While it's arguable that the Black
Dragons' minifeat is better, the original UA lets you maneuver
after that charge, giving you a more flexible tactical advantage.
You can use it to retreat and open a lane, or you can use the
extra movement to press onwards and apply pressure.

A great use, if you have access to boosts, is to use the Iron
Fangs to knockdown something huge in the way, minifeat, then
retreat back into shieldwall, opening the way for something
else to clobber whatever it was you critted.

Lots of stores have Black Dragon's in stock.
The unit if really good in scenario play. They can get up to arm 22 easily. When sitting on an objective, with good spacing, they are very difficult to displace in 1 turn.

Combining their Mini feat with Iron Flesh is a good way to make opponent go "umm maybe I just won't engage them."

The reason they are not used that commonly is the shear cost. You basically have to purchase the unit of IFP which once you pick up the unit + UA your over $80, then you have to purchase the BDP upgarde pack, which is another $10-12 from memory. So after tax your over $100. After that you still have to deal with those awesome bendy spears..

The strength of the unit is not the mini feat then run. The strength of the unit is to get to a point. Or walk into combat, shieldwall, declare mini feat. Then you have max arm. They are effective at charge / mini feat but at that point your not shieldwalling. Proxy them first, try it out, see if you like it.

They have the Iron Fangs in stock, but the Black Dragons upgrade blister is an online/convention exclusive.

A store might STOCK the Black Dragons blister, but they wouldn't make any money off of it (there's no retailer price for it).

That's fine Malfred...

As i'm pointing out the Black Dragons Upgrade are definitely not online exclusive, and the upgrade is definitely on shelves in stores along with Iron Fang Pikeman

They are in several of the stores in the south jersey philadelphia area. I never mentioned anything about making a profit. The reason I know that, I was staring at the blister on sunday.

I'd consider stocking it if it would move a box of Pikemen and a UA.

Fascinating. Haven't seen it yet. Smart move, too.

Does fielding BDP allow one more FA for IFP? And I don't have the book in front of me, but whats the most you can field FA-wise? Including tiers. Is it 2 units?

Actually, BDP allows TWO extra UAs, as for some reason the BDP UA is FA:2.

So does that mean you can just field 2 units of BDP?

Correct. You can field
2 units of vanilla IFP
1 unit of IFP with vanilla UA
2 units of IFP with black dragon UA

or one unit with normal ua and one with bd ua.

Edit: You can still only field a maximum of 2 units of IFP

Wow I would really like to see a game with 50 IFP fielded...

No no no, I guess I need to edit my example.

You can still only field 2 units of IFP no matter which UAs you put on them.
