Since not every race has playable fliers yet, I've noticed that more and more people are simply allowing forge world fliers for eldar/tau/etc.

We've all come across a fair bit of fliers so far and I'm just kind of curious what do people think of as the best flier to date?

I'm going to limit the category to fliers vs other fliers role in a 1v1 situation. Who'd come out on top? Please also consider their points range too. It's really not fair to compair 300 point model vs 150 point model. In that kind of matchup, imagine you had 2 or 3 (or 4)of the cheaper model then.

(I didn't include vs ground cause death ray is so crazy overpowered that it's kind of a waste of time discussing it)

I'm also leaving out the insanity super heavies such as the manta/tigershark/vampire/nid super MC flier (can't remember name) as those just don't seem right in comparison.

Also didn't put in obvious transport only craft like the Arvus lighter or aquilla lander or Orka drop ship

I haven't vote because I don't know the name of it. I really like that forgeworld space marine flyer I saw online. Was big and blocky with to ramps on the front with doors on the end. Looked like some type of assualt or breaching aircraft. Very cool.

there's the storm eagle (on the list)

And then there's the Thunderhawk which is what I think you may be thinking of. It was a super heavy flier so it didn't make it to the list. The storm eagle is a close runner up though if you were thinking that one instead

The best AA flyer is either:
- the Marauder Destroyer with its 3 TL Autocannons and Assault Cannon (lots of dakka, with a good line-up, you can take out 2 flyers/turn)
- the Tiger Shark A-X-1 with its Super-Heavy Railgun (this thing just instagibs stuff)

For normal games, the superior AA flyer is the Vendetta, no real challenger here. 3 TL Lascannons and AV12 for only 130 points...

I like the Chaos Daemons Flying MC's. A bloodthirster has a good chance of destroying an AV 10-12 vehicle if you give it Unholy Might, and the inv saves are really helpful

Aw, Vendetta wins again? As much as it irks me to admit it, the dakkajet's guns still don't pack the same kind of punch to bring down a flyer as what the Vendetta can pack. But maybe that's a good thing. It would be sad if the whole rules writing for flyer stats became a race to outdo the vendetta.

I would say Dakkajets with the fighta ace upgrade is one of the best choices against light armored fliers but i dont know about others.

I voted IG Vendetta, because it's an amazing model and has arguably the best rules and points cost.

If I were to base my vote on just the model however, it would be an overwhelming vote for the Ork Dakkajet.

Because it's got a fairly mediocre chance of killing a Vendetta, but a Vendetta will almost always kill a Dakkajet. Somehow they cost roughly the same.

Yeah, for a supposed Dogfighter, the Dakkajet kinda sucks against most flyers. Although it can kill a Vendetta from behind, if it gets a rear shot.

Probably ture but I didn't include the super heavies in this though or else I'd have to throw down crazy things like the manta too. I've forgotten a few other options so I'll add them to the list.

You also forgot the Thunderbolt, which is a better dogfighter than the Vendetta. The TL punisher cannon Vulture is also awesome against AV 10/11 flyers, but obviously worthless against AV 12, so it averages out to worse IMO.

Added to the list. BTW, is a land speeder tempest a flier? I don't have the updated rules for it, the old IA 2 still says fast skimmer. Heard they changed it but I haven't found any evidence. Also, blight drones count as fliers now? I can't remember if they changed those too or just still fast skimmer.

As cool as the assault ram is, so cool I even bought one, it cannot shoot against other flyers, only ram them, both of its weapons are templates the magna melta and the missiles which are one use only, I think it would miss out in this, it does get a 5up save from front armour though

Really as long as the Vendetta remains so cheap, its the clear winner. That being said I always down one using the waagh turn. (since thats really the only good way to use the Waagh anymore)

On the other hand, ramming with an AV 13 vehicle that can move 36" a turn AND gets an "ordnance" attack is a pretty effective weapon when a ramming attack automatically hits.

Even against AV12 it's still an amazing AA machine. 20 shots, 15 hits, roughly 2.5 glances. Flyers don't generally have more than 3 HPs, so that's on average rolls a pretty much dead flyer. And with Vector Dancer you can save yourself from the opposing fighters retribution, as he won't be able to get a bead on you if you're behind him. And if he jinks, he loses all effectiveness which is pretty similar to being destroyed.

Strafing Run also makes the TL Punisher Vulture amazing against ground targets, so once you've hosed all his fighters out of the air you can still achieve things.

Punisher cannons are STR 5, not STR 6. The result is that it's amazing at glancing to death AV 10/11 targets, but against AV 12 you can't even roll dice.
